Does a 6 volt turn over a lot slower than a 12. The reason I ask is I looked at naa 6 volt, it would not start turned over ultra slow. Owner said it has always turned over slow but use to start.Owner said battery is only 3 wks old.I have a 51 8n 12 volt that turns over quite fast. Owner does not know why it won't start, neither do I.

6v turns over slower than 12v.. but plenty fast enough to reliably start.

slow starter turner is a bad cable, weak battery.. bad conenction.. or bad starter...

Does "bad" convert over to "UGLY"?

Ugly battery.
Ugly starter.
Or, just down rite, UGLY electricals?

Up here, every thing that ain't "pretty" has to be UGLY. Or, if ain't "GOOD", everything must be "BAD"!. Whatever happened to "questionable"?

i have a TO-20, 6-v, had starter checked when i bought it, with good cables and battery, it starts with-in 3>4 turns..any 6-v will start faster with a 12v hooked up to it..which means , check every thing related to it for good connections. nothing wrong with 6-v systems, if p/m as usual...

You can jump a 6v starter with a 12v system , ie truck and jumper cables .

[color=red:14fd844ade]DO NOT hook the jumpers up to the 6 volt battery [/color:14fd844ade], turn the ignition "on" so the coil has 6v power , attach the positive jumper to the frame , touch the lug on the starter with the negative jumper cable .

As long as the solenoid is not activated the starter is not in the active 6v system and the 12v will not back feed into the 6v system .

If you are still unsure about it , you can remove the cable from the starter so it is not hooked up to the 6v system at all .

Why do you want to be arcing, sparking & burning that srarter stud??? Get a good connection there then touch the ground on a clean casting. Doing it your way will ruin the threads so when you need to get the cable off, the whole stud will turn & break the connection inside.

Good point , I never take the cable off to jump one . When I bench test a starter I put a nut on the stud , just didn't think about it while posting .
