Elec. question

I just bought a 52 8N side-mount, it came with a dead battery. I bought a new one, and it started right up. But the next day, I noticed the starter turning a bit slower. The amps showed +10 for a little bit then stayed at +5. I ran it for about 30-45 min with the power up and it wouldn"t move. I am only slightly above electrically illiterate, can some one tell me what this means and how to trouble shoot it?

Check the battery voltage with it not running first with a good meter. Should get around 12.3 volts give or take a little. Then start it up and check again you should get around 13.6 volts give or take a little bit. If you do not get those numbers you got a problem some place

6.3 is nominalvolts on a good 6v battery.. so I'd want to see 7.2 so.. you ain't charging.

try a motor test.. then post back

I guess there's not one, I thought there would be some significance to the ammeter showing a constant charge, and didn't think that was normal. Thanks for the help.

um.. you WANT it to show a charge.

after it has replenished battery from starting, it will still show about a 4a charge, even carrying ignition current.. etc.

so far.. souds like it's actually working correctly, unless there are other issues...

The new 6v battery may have been built last summer. The new battery I put in my tractor a year ago in Dec was built in aug of the same year.My hydrometer said it was 2/3 charged.I started the tractor and hauled some firewood. The 8n has a good owners manual, guess no one reads it.

most people I work with don't even bother to ownt he manual for their tractor.

I own manuals for dozens of tractos i don't and probably never will own.. :)
