Jumped the ignition switch, ballast is hot and coil too. 8v top of coil while still on tractor. New rotor. Points < 2 yrs old.

Oh-12v, starter converted to 12v also. Ohms on coil shows .8 on 1k scale. Bad coil?

on a 12v system, i'd run a 12v style coil and the oem ballast.. is that what you have or do you hav ethe 6v coil.. if the 6v coil, it needs more resistance than just the oem ballast.

primary on the coil is likely .5-2.5 ohms. on the 1k scale.. you likely can't tell anything unless yer eyes can see the needle move 1/1000 of the scale? :)

I have a very old vom.I can pick out a shorted scr with a diode in parallel with it.The low ohms range is right on if you read it right.

and I bet it's not on a 1k range on a 1.5" swing gauge or on a 4$ autoranging meter like the OP is likely using.

Eric........iff'n yer resistance reading 0.8-ohm is correct, that is typical of the OEM 6-volt squarecan coil. The MODERN 12V squarecan coil should read about 2.5-ohms.

BOTH the OEM 6V and the modern 12V squarecan ignition coil NEED the "infamous ballast resistor" NO ARGUE!!!!

Iff'n yer certain about yer squarecan ignition coil is 12V, and yer resistance is 0.8-ohms, then you have a BAD 12V squarecan coil and needs to be replaced because you will NEVER gitt enny sparkies. Its the LAW, electro-magnetic Law. .......Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Yes, I do have a ballast resister, that got very hot. The coil has a crack top to bottom on one side, not broken open but, a clear crack. The coil is 3 yrs old and it is a 12v, not 6.

Erik........well guess what??? you have a BAD coil. It should be intuitively obvious you should NOT have a crack. So do I haffta tell you to replace yer BAD coil??? ........respectfully, Dell

Eric......... now PAY ATTENTION; how many times do I haffta tell you, I don't care what TSC sez, the original 6V squarecan coil is about 1-ohm (0.8-ohm is close enuff to 1-ohm) and the modern 12V square can coil is 2.5-ohm. Coils don't change resistance unless they are BAD. .......respectfully, Dell sparkie-meister

UNCLE. New 12v coil, ballast res., points, rotor, 8 v top of the coil, no spark. I GIVE. So you're saying that my NEW coil, labelled 12v, is in fact a 6V coil?

Eric.......how many times do I haffta tell you. I don't care what TSC box sez, the ohm-meter don't LIE. About 1-ohm is always and will always be a 6V-coil. About 2.5-ohms is always and will always be a 12V-coil. UNDERSTAND???

I'm assuming that you do know how to read yer ohm meter, don't you??? 2.5-ohm is a MAJOR difference (2.5 times) from 1-ohm. Even cuzzin' weakeyes should be able to tell the difference. It ain't a RCH difference. ........respectfully, Dell sparkie-meister

Maybe if you'd stop with the odd language you'd be more clear. When I put my meter on the brand new '12 v coil for Ford front mount distributors', and, it reads .8 on my 1k scale, it's not intuitively obvious to me that the brand new coil is bad.

I went to a farm type store today, ammeter in hand, and checked 4 different coils, can type and round, 6v and 12v, all read .8-1 on my meter.

Checked inside dis for continuity everywhere-all checks out. Update-I did find the points to open, and readjusted. Put back together and it started and I mowed for almost an hour. Shut down for 30 mins. Went to start again, and it wouldn't. Haven't even checked anything yet...so, dont know if I show no spark or not.

You dont measure low ohms on the 1k scale.Any one can buy a meter, knowing how to use it is another matter.
