1948 8n 12v - starter issues

My 8N is 12v. Electric shop dude says its a 6v starter. I have no way of knowing. Here's the dilemna. I cannot get the 2 brushes out that go to the fields, since they are 'soldered' or something. The brass bolt also, is in there with metal.

I don't have a heavy iron, and, could buy a 6v new on Ebay for 90, or 12v new for 113..

My question is this-if mine is 6v and it worked all this time under 12...Will the 12v starers hold up better than 6v models on tractors that are 12v?

ditto what teddy said.

in any event.. i expect the wireing in a 6v starter to be heavier.. and the insulation is fine for 12v.

for limited use, and not grinding on it till it throws solder.. i tend to like a 6v starter in a 12v convert.. simply because many times it gets done as it is easier than rings or a valve job.

do get a good bendix on the new starter as they take a tad bit of a beating due to the speed they wind in and engage the flywheel.

your call either way. when my 6v starter went bad on my 12v naa.... the 12v repair parts were cheaper than the 6v repair parts so I had them convert it. fortunately the naa was already a good starter and someone had converted it for a reason other than the engine being worn out.

I could have him do just the brushes...The elec. shop dude says it'll be at least $50 to fix the brass post and then, the commutator he says will only last 5 more yrs...I figure I may as well buy a new one, or, find an iron and do it myself...He says that the brass post is a hassle to remove, have to take the field coil out and then there's a change you damage the other heavy wire etc...

I can't tell how 'bad' the commutator is, but, as a shadetree mechanic, I figured new brushes and bushings would make 'er go...

The old bushings were definitely bad, too much play. I already replaced both. 2 of the brushes are quite worn. I buffed up the commutator good and in my stubbornness, I figure I'll ask around if someone can lend me an iron...with labor $ out of the way, I can prolly fix it myself...
