1948 8N 12V - Another bendix perspective

Just got off the phone with a local Ford parts dealer and he says to make sure not to use a battery with more than 450CCA to protect the bendix...

Makes me wonder if either type bendix is ok to use, but the battery is the big variable that causes both types to break, maybe the newer ones are a little less durable than the OEM style.

Have to check my battery CCA when I get home...

Erik,

Call him back and tell him he's fired because he doesn't know what
he's talking about. CCA = Cold Cranking Amps...yer battery's
ability to deliver cranking power...it's "cranking capacity", if you will.

Tim

BULL. CCA is what the battery is capable of delivering.
The winding resistance of the starter & battery cables determine just how many of those amps the starter draws, it has no relation ship to the battery capacity. Unless the battery is too small and can't deliver enough amps to satisfy the starter needs.
No such thing as too big of a battery capacity.

Good to know...I just purchased the new OEM style bendix, he says they have no problems with them even on 12v systems...Not sure if my starter is 6 or 12v, but, I've had this tractor 4 yrs and sure started it a lot...ring gear in good shape too...I never like the sound though, of the bendix engaging - just have to get used to it...

My battery has 800 cca,and starts the motor just fine. The battery will only deliver what the starter draws, good starter, low draw, worn starter, high draw. It's really that simple.---lha

Hilarious advice from the "dealer." Ask him if you need a different battery for the headlights because you don't want all those "amps" going through that little filament!

LMAO - pay no attention to that advice!!! I have been known
to (more than occaisionally) jump the starter on my N's with
the TWO 12V batteries in my F-350 diesel - starter does
turn faster, but it has never hurt a Bendix yet -batteries
cannot deliver more amps than the starter can use.

Not sure if some of the replies are talking bendix or starter motor there is a difference. the bendix is a gear that uses centrifugal force to engage and the ol "N" will throw the gear out with more force with increased amps but the bendix on these tractors is a tough guy, less you have one built of ....
