I could buy a 1941 9N for $1500 but the guy said it would need brakes. How much trouble will it be to change the brake pads?

Lewie........iff'n you squander $25 (cheap) for the I&T FO-4 manual, it will show you how better'n 'splainin' here. Suggest you also install "Sure-Seals" to keep from further oiling yer brake shoes. That is the major problem with 9N brakes, the diffy mounted splash-lube oil-slinger, OVER-LUBE the trumpet mouth bearing and guess what??? OILED BRAKE SHOES.

There are several schemes to clean OILED brake shoes, from using propane torch to modern spray brake-cleaner, to replaceing the shoes with clean dry friction lining.

Either way, yer gonnna haffta remove BOTH the brake drum and the axle outta the trumpet so you can open up the brake housing. That is why you squander $25 on the FO-4. You do NOT want to pay the dealer to do this$$$ .......respectfully, Dell

Thanks a bunch Dell!

So it sounds like there is a good chance that the brakes have been accidentally oiled.

So, the tractor may be a good bargain then, even if I have to remove both wheels, drums and axles?

I feel confident enough to be able to do the work.

Brakes and seals on a 9/2N is probably the nastiest , hardest ( mean'n back breaking) job to do to a N,,, it would have to be a perfect 41 before I would shell out $1500 for it,,, then I probably would pass...

I spec a shop would get 8 to 10 hr. to do the job right,,, only a few know how to do the job right,,, most do a hack job....

Years ago the local tractor mechanic sold me every N tractor/part he had and he no longer works on them .

He said most folks think they should get a lower price for working on a $1200 tractor .

A days labor is the same cost on an antique tractor as it is a new tractor , but the the guys with $50K + tractors don't complain about a $600 bill .

Nice to know there are still a few honest mechanics that wont hack a job to get it out the door .

Brakes on a 9n is a joke. I had mine repaired at a reputable ford tractor dealer to have them not working a year later. If you are on sloped land, find a better tractor. I am on level ground and have no issues with no brakes.

When 9/2N brakes are repaired correctly they work as good as any...

Its when folks haft arse it,,, use 70 year old hold down/hardware and believe a sure seal is a silver bullet... a SS has its place but not a fix all.

I am all ears if someone wants to tell me were 8N brakes are better...
EZ'er to replace that's not better....

You can install 9/2N axle set ups on a 8N,,, to me that's a upgrade...

Hello again,

I would like to thank - soqueu, Ken(Ark), Hobo,NC and Dell (WA) for their comments.

I forgot to mention that the guy also gave a nice new looking box-scraper and blade attachments, so I think I did okay for $1500.

I ended up buying this tractor. She runs nice but need an exhaust and the brakes. I will buy a manual and dig into it soon.

We have just moved to Tennessee from New Mexico and I have a nice garage to work in. I will just take my time and do it right.

Thanks again, Lewie

Here is a nice run down on the 9N/2N brakes from our own John(TR)

It has written instructions with a nice group of pics.

I am sure somebody here can answer any questions you might have when you dig into them .
