12 volt clearance question

I have some questions for those of you who have done the 12 volt conversion:
Does the new alternator extend out further from the engine than the old generator does?
Can you tell me exactly how far it sticks out from the edge of the hood?
Does it mount in the same location as the old generator?

The reason for my questions are that my 8n has a FEL on it and the loader frame runs very close to the generator now (the frame is actually notched around the gen.) and I'm wondering if the alternator conversion will fit.

n general, it will stick out further on both the early 8N (right side) and the late 8N (left side), but generally more so on the early right side tractor. You can make this more or less, within limits with the design of your mounting brackets. You can also use a smaller alternator than the Delco 10-SI, such as some Nissan, Hitachi, etc.
 
Like JMOR says, bracket design can be a large factor.

I can't really speak for the brackets that you order, but if you design your own, there are many possible variables.

So it seems like the answer is: the off the shelf kits won't work due to the brackets sticking out too far and the alt being too big. Other than a small drill press I don't really have the tools to fabricate brackets. Guess I'll be sticking with the old 6v system.

I had the same problem. Here is what I did. Used the aftermarket brackets, on the bottom mounting "double U" bracket I used a 3/8" bolt that was 5" long. Inserted from the back, installed lockwasher and nut. Added some washers for spacing and then installed a 2" OD flat idler (3/8" bore) another lockwasher and nut. Once you set the tension on the belt, tighten the first nut first and then tighten the one in front of the idler. Yes, I am running a flat idler on the wrong side of the v belt but it hasn't been a problem for four years. Picture is not very good but you can see the idler just below the alter. pulley. It looks like you've managed to keep the alt mostly under the hood. I would definitely appreciate any more info you have to share on how you did this.

Another concern in remounting the charger is the length of the fan belt. The shorter the belt the closer it is to the engine.

Thing to watch is; if, the belt is too short the alt/gen belt can't be replaced without total removal and you need some clearance off that HOT exhaust manifold.

Just noticed in the pic that JMOR posted that there is a 90 degree adapter to relocate the distributor. Never saw that before. I am sure it makes it easy to service on the vehicle. Where can a guy get one and what is the cost?
