8n oil drain plug.....

Bought a 'very used' 1950 8N. Oil is really black, so thought it would be wise to change the oil and filter. I tried to removed the drain plug using a 16" adjustable wrench - it won't turn. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Original and aftermarket plugs may have different wrench sizes to use, 1", 1-1/16, etc.

If possible, use a piece of thick wall steel tubing or pipe as a cheater bar and have at it.

Your Craftman or Snap-On wrench breaks, get it replaced no charge.

Cletrac.......good idea to change oil and filter. Sometimes you haffta use more BRUTE FORCE. Take a hydraulic jack and board to keep yer wrench in contact with the 1-1/16 square plug. Then fit a 3-ft pipe extension over yer wrench handle. Lay on the ground and brace yer feet against a tire and PULL with yer back. Yer back muscles are much stronger than yer arm muscles. Then when loose, putta BIG SHALLOW tubb under the drain and finish the job. Use a NEW GASKET when you re-install screened plug. .......Dell

Make sure you are turning the the right way. Many people turn down facing nuts and bolts the wrong way.

the plugs are often rounded off so that a regular wrench just won't do. I'm a fan of the "basin wrench", the harder you pull, the tighter it grips.

Clet:

If the plug has decent corners, buy or borrow a properly sized open end or combination (not adjustable) wrench.

If you cannot turn the plug with the wrench using the armstrong method, strike the end of the wrench opposite to the plug with a 2 or 3 pound hammer. Make absolutely sure that you are attempting to turn the plug in the proper CCW direction when viewed from below.

I strongly advise that you buy a new drain plug gasket from your CNH dealer before you drain the oil as you will most likely need a new one and your dealer may not stock these anymore.

as the others said.. use the correct tool. an adjustable wrench is not ideal for this. furthermore.. someone probably tightened it to within an inch of it's life to get it to stop leaking because they were to cheap or ignorant ( both? ) to make a new gasket.. or buy one.

DO make or buy a new paper/fibre gasket once you go get it off.

It finally came loose. Hooked a chain to the wrench - other end to a big turn buckle that was tied to my old AC. After a few turns it broke loose. Looks like someone put gasket cement on the rubber gasket. Thanks for all the advice.
