Guess I stumped you all with this one!!!

Was mowing... stalled out, not sure if it was low fuel, or junk in the fuel that caused it. Tried to start again, and the bendix broke off the starter. Replaced that still would not start. Turns over but will not "catch." Pulled carb, cleaned it blew out all the holes. New plugs, cond, points. Sprayed starter fluid in the carb and in each plug hole with no luck. When I pulled the plugs they were still clean and dry. Carb will flood with excessive cranking and spills out the bottom. Turned on the gas with the carb bolt pulled and watched the gas flow out of it.

Any help is greatly appreciated. THANKS.

If you mix fire, gas and compression you will get an explosion.

Pull the plugs and take a quick compression reading. If in fact all the plugs are dry, that means the intake valve isn't opening. If you don't have compression, your exhaust valves aren't working either.

Yea,maybe not to smart on my part... I'll remember that!

I do not have a compression test kit. I did put my finger over the holes as I tired to turn it over. It had enough pop to push my finger away. Does that mean anything?

I didn't mean to imply you were doing anything wrong. Gas, fire, and compression is what makes an engine run.

If there was enough compression to blow your finger off the spark plug hole, that tells me your valve train is working and it should start.

Remove the air cleaner pipe and hit the carb inlet with starting fluid while cranking it over - It should fire off.

Maybe someone else will chime in with some troubleshooting hints.....

Thanks for the suggestions, Bill!
I did try the starter fluid in threw the air cleaner with no luck....

Also- Can I even do a compression test with the tractor not starting?

I am at a loss here!

Did you try 911 ? I hope its not a life threatning situation ? So, what's your problem ? Tell us so we can maybe help out . God bless

As far as the emergency, it is one!!! My grass is getting too long and my kids are getting stung by bees that are enjoying the over flow of clover!

Here's my problem, among many!:

you should spray air directly in the carb throat, take the hose from the air cleaner to the carb off or just pull it off and move it aside than when it get running put it back on, is your gas good? i have had problems with bad gas or condensation i would drain a bit of gas out of the tank just for the ell of it. also buy a compression tester they are cheap and buy a spark tester they are both very reasonable and very well worth it when you need em!

Boro,

My guess is electrical. A few questions:

1. Do you have a bright blue spark at each plug?
2. If not, do you have voltage to the top of the coil? You should have battery voltage with the points open and about 3-3.5 volts with the points closed.
3. Temporarily run a jumper wire straight from the battery to the top of the coil. Does it start? If so, the problem is from the battery through the switch, ballast resistor, and to the coil. Trace through and find the problem. Don't run it long with the jumper wire. You'll burn up the coil.

Post back with what you find.

Good luck,
Danny

Have you pulled a plug wire and put a good plug in the socket and put the end of the socket to good ground and tried starting it to see if you have a good spark at the plug? You must have fuel and you must have fire. You say you have fuel but don't mention fire. Gene

what's spark look like?

no poping on starter fluid means no spark or super weak spark.. or -0- compression..( maybee sticky intake valves? longshot though..)

You never said if you have spark or not.You should get a spark tester,so you know how strong the spark actually is.It should jump a 3/16" gap.Mine stopped at 5/16,so it's pretty good,it's something you can use to check for sure, and cost very little.---lha

Not trying to be smart but you haven't stumped anyone. YOU have to determine whether the problem is spark or fuel. It is one or the other. We can't be there to test it for you. You have been told how to check for these two items.

Wow, thanks for the ideas and suggestions. I will get working on it now.

I must apologize if I came across a little obnoxious here... for some reason on the modern side it never showed me everyone's initial ideas.

Got some work ahead of me... I will get back to you.
