Cam Follower Pin

I've read a lot in this Forum and another about problems with the hydraulic lift and it's causes. People seem to center on replacing the ram cylinder piston with one that takes an o-ring gasket, replacing the pressure (or safety) relief valve, and replacing the illusive "cam follower pin". I have looked every place I can think of and can find no direct reference to the exact location of this pin in the FO-4 Shop Manual or the Master Parts Catalog. My lift arms will not lift a 6 1/2 foot disc up enough not to drag it on the ground and I need to fix it. I'm very, very new to the world of 8N tractors and to farming. I've just moved to 6 acres and want to grow a few things and this is my first tractor. I've got no family left to help so I thought I'd turn to you folks for some advise on this issue. Hi Gene, in my fo4 on fig fo 140 its item 71

it rides on the cam that is attached to the lift arm shaft and if its worn replace it. also make sure the control arm is straight.

You are heading in the right direction to get your lift fixed...someone here has a great pic or set of pics that show you the pin and how to remove it easily....

For a quick fix, loosen the 4 bolts up by your lift quadrant and see if you can adjust (slide) the plate back a bit. If you are lucky there may be some adjustment left that will help your lift work better.....you will see that the bolt "hole" is elongated a bit to allow the plate to move. Move it towards the "rear" of the tractor if you can.

If you don"t have any adjustment left, you will have to remove the top cover and start with replacing the cam follower pin.

have you tried it with lever under seat in both positions?draft control as I recall defeats the dreaded cam follower pin.it only comes into play in position control.it could be a leak in hydraulic cyl, or your brushhog could just be too heavy maybe.6ft is about the upper limit of what one will handle,it could concievably be a combo of heavy brushhog and weak relief valve.I would pull the inspection plates for a look.I had a sideplate on the pump freeze and break once,it would lift but not with a load.Just my opinion of course,but i would try it in draft mode.if it lifted then i would suspect problem in poition control linkages. if it still didnt I would pull sideplates and check for leaks.

woops,instead of brushhog make that disc,sorry ,brain doesnt engage properly sometimes!

This is a heavy disc. The 8N lifted the 60" Bush Hog up with little problem but they only weigh a couple of hundred pounds. This is a 6.5' Disc with 18" discs and weighs 553#. It initially lifted it a little but the left side dropped down when the left lower link arm bent a little. The lower arms are rusted so I am getting a couple of replacements that are supposed to be good from a place that has some used parts. I send him a check after I get them so I'm not worried.
Beyond that, the 8N is supposed to be able to lift that much according to what I've read about it.
I believe my next steps, according to what I've read in the wonderful Forum, are to follow these steps until the problem is solved: (1) check the lift with the depth control in both positions (2) open the right side inspection cover and look for leaks - if I see any leaks then I take the seat off and open the system to fix the leaking parts; (2) if no leak is apparent then I check the pressure relief valve (safety valve) with my finger [IS THERE ANY DANGER IN THIS???] to see if it is leaking, (3) take lift arms off and follow instructions to remove lift cover then replace the ram cylinder with one with an o-ring, replace the cam pin, and replace the pressure control valve, and replace anything else that shows signs of advanced wear such as groves and pitting.

Thanks for posting the ever elusive Cam follower pin information I have been looking for it, I am working on hydraulic promlems with my 9N right now I know for sure what on problem is it is my own newbie mistake I put the lift rocker on upside down this may be the cause of my 9N lifting my five foot brush hog,need to fix this first and then further diagnose it to see if I still have the problem.

is is 8N. You won't find one in a 9N/2N........no position control.

I have the lift rocker turned to the correct position now reading the F-04 to see about adjusting the Quadrant just put the plow onn for weight
Plow raises up slowly gets to the top pressure relife valve opens and plow comes down and then the cycle rpeats itself, no leaks that I can see have to study over this F-04 for a while.

Your getting on up there in weight if you bend the lift arms,be very careful on rough ground ,if you bounce that disc it can snap your lift arms.If your lift cyl is leaking you will need to pull the lift cover,a leak any where else will require removing the pump.If you check the relief valve with your finger be careful lots of parts moving when pump is running.if you take the lift cover off to replace pin,i would suggest zanes lift adjusting jig .it makes it much easier to adjust and the book alone is worth the money..

When you get old your follower pin gets worn out.The tractor can be fixed but you are out of luck.
