1950 8N CHIPPED PINION TOOTH

Innocently enough, I was removing the trumpet to replace the lower lift pivot bolts and this is what I found.

Is this something I should replace - Or will it last another 60 years?

whats the diff ringgear look like? how bout the diff side bearings and races? If the chipped pinion is all you have and everything else is ok and you're not plowin or working her hard she will last a longtime.

Ring gear looks fine to me - No chips.

Side bearings have rust pits in them which I'm planning to replace.

This old girls hard working days are behind her. Most work she'll see is running a rotary cutter.

Bill......its gonna last a LOOOOooooN time. It may "whine" a little iff'n you have sensitive ears. .......Dell, the deeeeef

I have seen quite a few like that on tractors I have parted out (they ran they did not fall out of the sky),,,, If it were My own personal tractor it would get replaced...

Its now just a matter of moving the rear case back to get at the pinion,,, you will need a slide hammer to get the pinion out,,, it has a threaded hole in the end just for that....

Plenty of cheap pinion/differential sets on ebay....

WARNING  all I know I read on the Internet,,, do it enuff and you can become a guru also,,, not responsible for damages,,, I read it and just pass it along,,, proceed with caution

DollarBill,if you plan on keeping it and using it to work .Now is the best time to replace it,while you have it tore down and not next summer when you need it.The bearings on the pinion may be pitted also. There are lots of ring and pinions around, just ask and look around.

Tooth mesh looks bad.I would put some paint on a good tooth and check the mesh.Gear looks like it has run hot as in no oil.If that tooth breaks further it could bust up the housing. When a tooth breaks under load theres a loud bang as the next tooth gets slammed.I would call that more than a chip.

I have a 1965 IH dump truck that I bouoght without a bed on the frame and the rear end lying on the flat bed that came with it. The ring gear had half a tooth broken off. I had no money to buy anything so I figured what was it going to hurt to see how long it would run before it failed?? I put it all back together and ran it. That was over 20 years ago and I put an average of 20K miles on it every year. The rear end is still in the truck and still ready to go to California if needed.

Look at it this way, if it fails the work to get back to it is about the same since all you have done is remove the left trumpet housing and that should not have taken more than an hour or so. It might run for the next 20 years. Especially since you probably aren't going to work that queen anyway.

That's why I made the statement they did not fall out of the sky,,, they were operational at the time I removed them with no issue that I knew of with the differential,,, That chip sure makes it a hard sale tho for a used part

[b:84432e07be]Thanks everybody for your response. [/b:84432e07be]

The majority seems to think it will be okay as is so I'm gonna leave the differential alone and replace the pitted, outer axle bearings.
