Redid the seals on the Ford. Before I took it apart, did a check and when I rotate one wheel, the other rotates opposite. When taken apart, no wear shows on the inner axle butt end.

Do I need to reshim this so that, as the FO4 Manual says, they turn th same direction?

And, I hate to say it but do the shims go on right after you put on the backing plate, or on the trumpet end before you put on the bp?

If they both turn the same way it's too tight. I think the manual says to get them turning the same way then back off (add shim). Don't worry which way they turn, worry about axle end play. If the axles are snug and have no end play but still turn freely, you're good. It doesn't matter where you put the shims.

Excellent. I kinda figured it was ok with no visible damage on the butt ends, but, due to the cost if I did something wrong, figured it was worth asking. Thank you.

One more thing that bothered me was the cork seal that fits right over the splines and which the hub butts against. When I put it in, and then the hub, the hub wouldn't fully bottom out, it was hitting the cork. So, I cut it in 1/2 so it wasn't so thick. Worked fine. Prior owner had rubber seals there.

Why did this happen?

That cork seal is intentionally made too long so it gets tightly compressed when the hub is seated. However, if the hub splines are worn and the hub is moving in too far before it seats, you'll never be able to compress it enough. So, either you were just too gentle with it, or you've got a bad hub. If the splines are good on the axle and hub, the ends will be even with each other on the outside.
