I have a 1940 9N. I took off 12v generator with external regulator. Replaced with Delco 10SI. Added Radio Shack Diode 276-1661 (6A 50PIV) in wire from accessory post to P1 post with band toward alternator. Everything work fine at first. Was able to shut-off and restart. Ammeter was reading 20 at first then dropped to 10. After about 5 to 10 min, the tractor stopped. Found diode had burned out. Tried another and that burned out right away. Is it more important to have the amp reading of the diode higher or is the Peak Inverse Voltage more important? Or is something else causing my failure?

The diode only supplies a momentary current to 'kick-off' the alternator at start up. After that it has it's own internal field supply (diode trio). So, I believe you should take the alternator to the store & get a free check....it is likely your problem.

and it isn't a diode problem.. sounds like wireing or alternator issues.

once alt is up, there should be no current flow on the exciter line.

I agree with jmor.. you are focusing on a symptom.... not a problem. the 6a/50piv diode is fine... piv could be higher.. but in this case.. I've used 1a/50piv diodes for years.

your alt or wireing likely has a problem... once the alternator excites there should be no current flowing in the #1 excite line.

also... the fact that your tractor died is puzzeling... you should be able to disconnect the alternator altogether.. ie.. unbolt it and unplug it and run the tractor without it..... sounds like the alt had serious issues.. and or you have serious wireing issues.

Something is way wrong on that. I have never had a 1661 diode burn out on any 12 volt conversion I have done and I have done many of them

Found the problem - the wire from the P1 had laid across the manifold and, of course, burnt through and made contact. Thanks again for heading me in the right direction - wiring.
