Question. What is the difference between a 3ring kit and a 4ring kit beside the number of rings?
Is one better than the other.
This is for my 45 2N.

Well, they say the 3 ring kits cause less wear and are preferred. Unless you are going to work the ell out of it I really wonder how much it matters. I go with 3 ring kits, but I still wonder.

Old 49........you won't know until you dis-assemble yer engine whether you have 3-ring or 4-ring. Actually, 3-ring pistons are really 5-ring. 4-ring was an attempt to reduce oil burning and worked too well. It actually caused more cylinder wall wear. Remember, oil is the final seal between the ring and the cylinder walls. It should be intuitively obvious you don't want metal to metal contact.

In a regular castiron engine, you haffta bore the cylinders to gitt'em straight and true. With our sleeved N-engine, you just replace the 0.040 sheetmetal sleeve and yer back to original specifications without boring. Its really tuff to bore a sheetmetal sleeve. (too thin, turns into foil, no strength) Replace'um, eazier and cheaper. .......Dell

Thanks for the replies I think I"ll stick to the 3 ring.I hope to start with the tear down today.
I"m going to do a inframe rebuild my oil pressure is good.Just smokes and the head is leaking oil at the back of the engine.
Thanks Guys

Old 49........uh? you do know yer castiron oilpan IS the frame, don't you? And you haffta remove yer front axle support to remove yer oilpan. Oil leak is yer "T"-block feed to oil pressure gauge and oil filter. Consult yer I&T FO-4 manual fer specs.......Dell

Jimmyjack,I put 4 ring pistons and .090 liners M&Ws in my 2N when I rebuilt it the second time back in 1968.Dad and I rebuilt it the first time in 1957 with 3 ring pistons.I rebuilt it the third time last year and and used 4 ring pistons again. The pistons and liners didn't have all that much wear.I could have just done a re ring job on it but the wear was in the piston ring lands and wrist pin bushings,so I replaced them.If it lasted 30 years the first time and it has had some use! I figured 30 more years would out do me.So I'll say this I'm a mechanic by trade and if four ring pistons are so bad why does Cummins and Detroit diesel use them and get so many hours run time using them?So I will argue the point!

I have 4 ringers in mine also.

I didn't know any better at the time, and they were the same price as the 3 ringers.
