I just re-wired my 1952 8N to repair the previous wiring hack job (originally by a previous owner, and re-patched together by me). I built a new harness using the wiring diagrams from this site: http://home.earthlink.net/~8ntractor/12volt.html
The tractor has been converted to a 12 volt system with a Delco alternator. The old starter drive was shot so I also installed a new 12 volt starter. Also replaced the ignition switch, solenoid, terminal block, neutral-safety starter switch, and ammeter with the correct 8N parts, as all of these components were either bad, missing, or generic universal parts.
The problem I've ran into is that I can't even get the solenoid to click to start the tractor. It has (+) 12 volts to the solenoid. The way I understand it, the neutral safety starter switch acts as the ground for the starter solenoid? I tried jumping the connection for the neutral safety starter switch on the solenoid to the negative post on the battery, and again, not even a click. The battery is fully charged and I'm pretty sure the wiring harness in is correct, although it looks like I have the connections on the ammeter backwards.
How do I test the solenoid to see if it is bad? Just pull it off, jump the neutral safety starter switch to the negative side of the battery, and the other post to the positive side?
