12v idiot light question

Some time ago, I converted my IHC 340 to 12V using a Delco 10SI alternator. I went the idiot light route (becuse I like shiny, flashy things) and used the Dorman light pictured below.

All went well and the system has been trouble free for over a year. Last week I converted my 2N over using a Delco 12SI alternator (the 80's one with the plastic fan) and the same dash light. The alternator refuses to excite with this bulb. If i put a 194 marker lamp in the circuit it works. The resistance across the filament on the Dorman light is around 24 ohms, while the resistance on the 194 is around 12. Is the 12SI more sensitive to the resistance than the 10SI? Does anyone make a dash light that accepts the 194 bulb, or is there a decent looking light out there that fits in a 1/2" hole that has around 12 ohms of resistance? I already drilled the hole, so I'd like to use it. ;)

Do it like GM did. Add a 10 ohm resistor. Provides adequate excite current regardless of bulb AND alternator will still excite even if & when the bulb burns out.

Smitty........while adding that 40-ohm resistor to Delco 12SI would fix yer current "excite" problem. It'd probably be eazier to EXCHANGE yer 12SI for a 10SI. And then yer neato dashlite would work, toot-sweet. ......Dell

Dell, not adding 40 inside the alt, but rather 10 outside the alt in the excite line & in parallel with the idiot light. The 40 is part of the alternator.

JMOR......needa 'nutter kuppa kawfee, 10-ohms in parallel with idiot lite works for me too. Its the LAW, Kirchhoff's Law ......the blurry eyed Dell
