Dual wheels for '51 8N.....?

I was just wondering, is there a way to mount a set of dual rear wheels on my 8N? Or will that be likely to start breaking stuff within ? I'm needing a little more weight and flotation at the same time. I've got a Wagner FEL, AND the back-end gets kinda squirlly when I get a load of dirt.I've already got weights mounted in the back wheels and I HAD calcium carbide in the tires, but when I got new back tires,the tire shop didn't put the stuff back in the tubes, so now it's a-lot lighter. Any ideas guy's? Oh yeah, supposedly no-one around these parts has the proper equipment to put the calcium carbide in the tubes, even if I had some.HELP PLEASE!!! THANKS IN ADVANCED!!!!!
 
The duals should not tear anything up within, we have some on a 40 9n right now and have had them on many times in the past and have had no problems or ill effects, mounting them on an 8n is a bit of a headache because the lugs aren't long enough, there are several ways to do it and if you do you will not believe the difference it makes on pulling stuff and flotation.
 
Around here we use clamp on duels for working on the Salt marsh. A lot of 8&9N's mowing and raking with them.
 
wan2no,You said,I HAD calcium carbide in the tires.But I hope that you meant calcium chloride.You could make you a 55 gal drum filled with concrete that would hook up to the 3 point hitch to weight the back end down.
 
there are several ways to dual up a 8n, there used to be a kit to do it, its been discussed on here before, but im not sure if its still available, if you just need a counter weight without the added width, i think it was soundguy on here made himself up a good counterweight by running a rod thru a 55 gallon drum that will fit on the 3 point lift arms and filling it with cement after installing a device to hook the top link too, it seemed to work pretty good for him, maybe he will see this and expand on this some
 
Send me an e-mail and I'll send you a page from an owners manual that will show you how to fill your tires. Easy to do and not a lot of stuff needed to do the job

Yes you can install dual wheels/tires to your 8N but the factory parts to do so are a bit hard to find and the cost of the parts and new wheels and tires will be significant.

An alternative is to fill your tires with Rimgard. Rimgard is a relatively new liquid ballast made from sugar beets. Unlike CaCl, it is non corrosive. It's not cheap but it will be much less expensive than a new set of duals and heavier unless you load the duals.

Dean- where pray-tell would a guy find this Rimgard stuff? I'm in NW AZ. There's not a whole bunch of farm supply houses in my neck of the woods. Do you have an address for this stuff? Thank you for your help in advanced!!

The Damm yankee that has'em listed stops by the shop rite regular,,, he has had'em for sale for a month are so,,, He's a good guy (fer a yankee) :lol: ,,, save the number,,, I think TOH makes the studs to werk with'em are someone who hangs around the Ntractornutz pot belly stove does
 
Those are axle extensions on Craigslist. They"re not designed for duals. You would have the flat back surface of the extension against the flat surface of the outside of the inner wheel. There would be slop between these two surfaces as the lug nuts would not interlock the two surfaces against each other. You"ll need to have bolts custom made to lock the extension down to the outside of the inner wheel if that"s your intention. You might get it tightened down enough with the lug nuts to hold it in place, assuming you don"t use the tractor much for anything serious.

You can google Rimgard to find your nearest dealer.

If you do not experience freezing temperatures you can simply fill your tires with water. Alternatively, if temperatures fall below freezing, you can use RV anti freeze.

FarmerBlair,Thanks for the clarification regarding the proper use of the extensions. I actually use my 8N for a working tool around the ranch just about every day. I can't have something that wouldn't hold up to normal working conditions . Thank you for your help.
 
Dean, Thanks for the info. Believe it or not,it actually freezes up here in the high country.So I don't think it'd be too wise to put straight water in my tires , and I've got too many cactus plants of all kinds to safely use anti-freeze. Don't want to risk leaking the stuff if I were to be unlucky enough to get a hole through a tire. Bad for the animals you know.

Rimgard is organic and biodegradable but it is not inexpensive. If you get punctures you will loose some or all and it does make a mess.
