1948 8N starter runs on

After she starts, the starter is whirring loudly...Finally it stops long after I shut off the key. New solenoid. Do I need a rebuild/replacement starter or does it just need some maintenance. Never had it apart...thanks.

Tell us more... the ignition key on an OEM N tractor has -nothing- to do with the starter. Did you convert to an auto solenoid, and a key-start setup instead of the safety interlocked big thumb switch?

6v or 12v?

Does the tractor have the OEM thumb switch & key? In other words, you turn the key on, then press the big thumb switch on top of the tranny to start it, right? Then, the engine starts, but the starter continues to run??

Post back w/ more info & you will get plenty of help.

12v, standard equip, nothing changed...Thumb start. What I mean is after it starts, the starter is running on, and when I shut the motor off, it still runs(only happens once in a while though).

Erik........are you saying the starter motor continues to run after the engine has started??? The BENDIX screw should auto-magically disengage yer starter motor from yer flywheel ring gear after starting. Iff'n it don't, you need to find out why.

You may need to replace yer starter bendix or you may have a bad 3-terminal solenoid (they can be bad right outta the box, not common though) ...OR... yer little middle wire is "grounding" as it goes thru the dashpanel to the BIG THUMB starter pushbutton.

You say you replaced the 3-terminal starter solenoid??? WHY? they are semi-bullet proof.

Constantly turning yer starter motor will KILL yer starter motor. They's NOT BUILT to constantly turn ......Dell

I had replaced the solenoid because a month or 2 ago it wouldn't start...Rapped on the solenoid a bit (old car trick) and still no go. New solenoid-started right away. Will check the wires too...And the bendix whatever...I'll chek that too.thanks Dell

Sounds like one of 3 things. A wire that has a bear spot some place and is shorting out, #2 a starter button that sticks some times. #3 a bad soliniod which does happen even when they are new

that's an electrical problem.

If you have the proper 3 terminal start solenoid, then remove the wire from it and run a new temp one to the start button.. if this solves it.. your old wire was grounding out.
