3 point hitch repair info

I know the information is here somewhere as I have seen it before - my 3 point hitch is giving me trouble - it goes up but it is very hard to keep it in place - it either creeps up or goes down no matter how carefully or slowly I move the lever - so basically I cant get it to remain in place very easily - its either going up or down!
I checked oil - nice and full and oil looks good - no odd noises and when I turn off the tractor the lift gradually drops down.
Could it be the seals in the pump on the way out?
Is there a kit available with the seals for a rebuild?

OOPs Sorry this is for an 8N with the front mount dist and 6volt system so one of the older ones.

Do you have it in position control? Put the little lever under the seat in the up position & see what happens. Post back w/ results.

I've got the same problem - you described it better though - in less words.

I was hoping one of the more qualified folks around here would give some more detail on this but I can at least tell you what I've gathered and maybe save them some typing.

Assuming the little lever is in the UP position in your case:
It's likely a problem with the pumps exhaust valve operation for one of several reasons.
Apparently it's very common for sediment to build up around the pump causing issues with valve operation.
Ideally - you drop the pump and clean/inspect it including manipulating the valves and making sure all meets inspection. Flush/clean the sump(s) and reinstall.
A quicker job that has fixed the problem in other cases is: Jack up the tractor and pull the PTO shaft. Reach in and clean out the sludge and install new fluid.

I got all my ducks lined up to do this and have been temporarily sidelined w/back surgery. Laying around gives me lots of time to think and I keep coming up with questions I should have asked before. 1) Could these symptoms be possibly fixed with adjustments at the quadrant or is it a sure bet that it will require at least a sludgectomy?
2) Looking at the manuals - looks like the top cover comes off to clean/inspect linkages/rods etc... Bottom cover is for working directly on the pump system. Is this type a problem usually an adjustment or cleaning issue?

I'm no expert on this but I can tell you from my experience that if you go in to get rid of the sludge, make sure you do a thorough job. I recently had to rebuild the tranny in mine from major damage and while it was broke apart saw 50 years of sludge in the rearend. scraped a bunch out and kept going on the tranny. After puttin her back together, adding new oil, and running her through the gears, the world was good again....until. After using the 3 point again, which was great before the tranny rebuild, it starting giving me problems.

I think when you stir the soup without a good strainer, the noodles start getting all over the place and sometimes where you don't want them. Now I'm making time to clean it good and replace the erl AGAIN.
