I have a 1939 9N ford tractor. Can it be equipped
with a front end loader or a backhoe? If so, what would be the cost of such a modification?

Short answer:

Long Answer:

While any number of different FEL's can be found for this tractor the bottom line is the machine is not well suited to them for a myriad of reasons.

  1. No power steering
  2. Inadequate brakes
  3. Poor gearing
  4. Minimal mounting options
  5. Etc....

I had a Sauder loader on my 9N for about a week before I took it off and I've never looked back.

If you REALLY need a FEL I'd suggest you shop around for a newer tractor so equipped. Plenty of far better machines available for not a whole lot more than you'll wind up spending retrofitting a 9N. I bought a small 4WD Kubota with FEL for $6K and it's infinitly superior to the 9N with Sauder loader.

If you REALLY need a backhoe I'd suggest you shop around for a used backhoe. The 3pt rigs on AG tractors are ill suited to substantial hoe work and often lack the reach and lift capabailities of the real deal. Plus they beat the tractor up. If you just need a hoe for a one off job rent one. Around here a top of the line Case 4WD, hydrostatic drive, air conditioned, extend-a-hoe costs 165/day and will way out perform any AG tractor I've ever seen.

Yes it can be done but, the cost would be high unless you get lucky and find them cheap and you are able to do the mounting your self. Even then it will be slow and will be hard to move around. I have an 8N with loader and back hoe and we call it the nerd because it is so hard to do things with and its hard to drive around because of all the extra metal on it. Theres pictures of it in the web site if you want to see what one looks like

Dale: FWIW - I have both an 8N and a 9N -- I have a Wagner FEL AND a Sherman backhoe on the 8N -- Due to the differences in the front end of the two tractors - I would not consider doing either on the 9N - JMHO.

It will probably cost as much to
retrofit the hoe and loader as it would to
pick up a 600/800 with loader and hoe.
No power steering on N will kill you as
well as anemic hp.
