What does it take to convert from 6 volt positive ground system to a 12 volt system? The kits online include a alternator, brackets and wiring. What about the starter and coil. Naturally the battery needs replaced. Also (this tractor is new to me) I'm filing and cleaning the points every 8 hours or so of running time. Is this normal for this tractor? Thanks in advance.

If you are going to switch it over, don't mess with the 1 wire systems, search the archives for the 3 wire diagram and do it that way. Charges much better and no need to rev the engine right after starting. Converted my NAA a couple years ago, very happy with it, starter doesn't turn over twice before it pops off.

Floyd..... ..surprizingly enuff, Starter motor don't care, 6-or-12v positive or negative ground, 12-volts on 6-volt starter just SPINS FASTER. Its a sometimes band-aide for worn-out engine.

Gitta real 12-volt ignition coil (NO RESISTORS) NAPA IC-14SB ($15, cheap) Pay attention to coil polarity (molded in top of coil) rule is (-) to (-).

Surprizingly enuff, starter solenoid don't care, 6-or-12v positive or negative ground.

Surprizingly enuff, headlites DO CARE, use 12-volt headlite bulbs, ($5, cheap) Also yer dashboard armored meterlite needs new 12v bulb ($1, cheap) 12v taillite bulbs ($1, cheap)

and NO, you should NOT have to clean yer ignition points every 8-hrs (8-yrs maybe). Your distributor shaft seal is worn-out and entire distributor needs to be rebuilt. Kit $25 (cheap) NEW DISTRIBUTOR $250, yer call..... ....Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reason

That said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6-volt 8N, and I know how to do it right the FIRST time. If fact, I know 8-ways to do it right and they ALL work.

Thanks for the info. Part number and where to buy the distributor rebuild kit? Also one of the contacts inside the distributor cap is abnormally worn.So you are right on the worn bushing. She does fire right up with clean points.

The 6 volt starter is ok the coil will have to be changed NAPA has 12 volt coil that requires no external resistor. Delco 3 wire alternator is the "standard" Changed my Jubilee over, not a real big deal. I"m sure that some of the experts here will weigh in on this. good people with good advice hang out here. Good luck.
