Greets from Mississippi. I own a 1952 Ford 8N in pretty much original condition, other than the engine being rebuilt. The hydraulic lift abruptly ceased operating and after studying the manual I concluded that perhaps the most likely problem was that trash had stuck the relief valve open. As part of the process of removing the hydraulic pump, I was stumped no sooner than I had gotten to the PTO shaft . . . it would not come out. I've been told that sometimes the shaft becomes twisted and has to be cut from inside. What say y'all? Would putting a slam-hammer on it and trying to yank it out be an unwise move? Thanks! Jim Hampton, Wesson, Mississippi.

i have had to remove the pto shaft on my 1950 8n twice since i have owned it (18 years). the first time it pulled right out no problem. the second time it would not budge and i thought it might be twisted. before getting violent with it i took a sacrificial 1 1/2" wood chisel and gently tapped between the gasket and the shaft and immediately saw it pull apart from the tractor. it pulled out easy after that. good luck

I think you should contact Tom and have him come over and show you how to replace the relief valve from the inspection port. Save the pto replacement chore for another day. You'll make a new friend and learn a new trick!

I wish there were someone on this board who lived in my town and was willing to come over and help me unstick the engine on my TO-30 I just inherited.

Jim, I am also in Wesson, MS. I have a question. Why don't you just go after the relief valve from the left side inspection hole and change it. Why pull the pump? I replaced the relief valve in my Dad's 2N last weekend through the left side with no special crooked wrench. Just used a standard 11/16 boxed end wrench. I do have crooked wrenched ordered and they should be here Monday. I'll be glad to help you if you need me to. I'm on Third street.

DON'T yank too hard on if it won't come out, or you'll wreck $$$$ parts in the hydraulic pump.

If it's stuck, remove the lift cover, and check things out, and cut the shaft off, if it's twisted.

Jim..... .what Bob sez..... ..the "twist" in the PTO shaft is usually imperceptable and usually don't hurt 'nuttin' until it comes time to remove the $$$ hydraulic pump. Like now. New modern 1-3/8" replacement PTO shaft $150 (cheap)

Usually, you can reach it with a "saws-all" thru the removed 6"-dipstick cover plate. Don't have a saws-all? rent one. Simple, eh?

It usually gitts twisted by brushhoggin' without an over-running coupler (ORC) $65 (cheap) ..... ..Dell
