First I would like to thank Kelly Jewel for teaching me how to break my clutch free on my 9n. Thanks Kelly, worked like a charm.

Okay, now for the next techie question. I have the opportunity to purchase a 8n with a sherman transmission. However, after reading Mr. Smiths 8n pages on Sherman transmissions,I am confused. First I thought there was only one Sherman tranny. Okay, now I know there are at least a couple types. I now (thing)I know that the one with a long shifter is a hi/lo configuration. The one with a short shifter is a whole other set of running gears ( I think) Then I learn that there's a "Cable Type" Of shifter also. Okay, so the question is this. How do I know what I am buying if it has the cable shifter? Does that denote a type of Sherman? Thanks guys/girls.

Close sounder. The 'Steps' are EITHER overdrive/standard (1:1.5) OR underdrive/standard (1.55:1)in BOTH lever or cable. The cast lever that bolts on from the outside can belong to either a 'Combo'(hi/lo/standard) OR the 'Creeper(extreme underdrive @ 9.25:1). Actually, the true 'Step-downs' came in 2 ratios but too much information..... ....

The cable shifter units were generally overdrives, and the shifter mounted ont he dash, with a pull knob. Mnay times the cable is bad, however a few people are now making repop shifter cables, and at least one person here has converted a cable type to a lever type with lots of love and sweat.

If your shifter is "s" shaped ( dogleg) and thick metal.. it is either a combo, or an underdrive. if the shifter is a round rod with a single bend, and a knob on it.. it is an overdrive.

Smerman made lots of trannies, as did many other companies.. some were pre trannies.. some were post trannies.. Hupp, everet howard.. etc..
Shuttle shifs.. reversers, live pto setups.. etc..
