Should I do NAA Valve Adjustment?? (PIC)

I am getting ready to remove my loader and do a 12 volt conversion on my NAA. (Please don"t comment on this. To each his own. I don"t want to have that discussion.)

I was wondering of I should also do a valve adjustment? When I idle down as low as possible, I can hear some ticking, which I think is the valves.

THe engine has good compression at around 120 in each cylinder. The tractor has good power and runs fine.

Should I be concerned about the valves or just keep runnin er?

Adjusting valves on an NAA is pretty easy to do. The Shop Manual claims you can do it without removing the gas tank, but I find it"s easier with the tank off. If I were you, I
would adjust the valves, just so you know they are OK. Plus you can eye-ball the valve springs, retainers and such, while you are at it. Not to comment on your 12V conversion, but when I converted my NAA, I put in electronic igntion. I have not even thought about points in 5 years. Handles cold (-20F) no problem. Since I put in electronic ignition, the only reason my NAA ever dies on me, or won"t start, is when all the gas in the tank is mysteriously replaced by....air.

If you decide to do it, here's a link to Zane's instructions on how to do it.

Doug..... ...I don't have enny problem with your converting yer NAA Jubie to 12v.

As for clicking OHV rocker clearance, MORE CLEARANCE is better'n NONE. Insufficent valve clearance will lead to burned exhaust valves.

I just checked yer OHV specs: 0.015 Hot. Usually they allow +/- 0.001 variance (tolerance) from spec. Me? I always adjust for MAX allowable clearance because as time goes by, the clearance closes up. By setting clearances to 0.016, I can go a very LOOOooong time before I haffta reset the valve clearances. And iff'n they're ALL set the same you won't hear one clackin'way.

But BEFORE I started grabbin' feeler gauges, I'd rig up some sort of "stethascope" (lenght of rubber hose) and IDENTIFY where yer suspect "clacker" is located. 'course, iff'n ya gotts time to burn and gotta an ITCH to scratch, and you just gotta tweak yer valve clearances, go right ahead..... ...respectfully, Dell, a 12v advocate for the right reason

Really nice looking rig. My Jub has noisy valves also, from idle to wide open. I"ve been planning for years to adjust them, but haven"t gotten around to it yet. And maybe this year I"ll put the loader back on..... hope that white stuff is all gone til next year. LOL

THanks,

I rebuild all the hydraulics with new spool and loader cylinders. It really works great but I could use power steering. I don't use it much but it is really great when you need it.

Thanks for your response.
