OT. 2 wheel garden tractor

I need to know what they used to call the old 2 wheel tractors used for small truck farms and gardens in the 30s,40s, maybe 50s. They were basically a differential with a 3.5, 5, 8 etc.H.P. motors mounted above and in front of the wheels with long handles out the back. Usually had 2 large levers mounted between the handles that you would pull back for forward and reverse. The wheels were tractor tread but a lot of them had car tires mounted to them. You would hitch up the equipment you were using and walk behind them but some would have a seat on the equipment. My brother and I in the 50s put tons of miles on dads tractor pulling a goat sulky in the summer and a sled in the winter. It never failed to start and never missed a beat. I want one to pull the grand daughter around on a sled with. Dad lent his to a "friend" in the 60s and about a year later he traded it in on a new push mower. I can't beleave dad didn't bust his head over that one. I think they were called Mules. Anyone see these for sale anymore and about what do they get for them. Thanks.

We had one when I was a kid in the '50s. We called it a "putt-putt." It was great fun. As already noted elsewhere, Simplicity made a lot of these, and sold many of them through Montgomery Wards. Back in the late 1970s I bought a used Montgomery Wards model with a 5-hp B&S engine, a plow, a disk, a spike harrow and a cultivator for, as I recall, $175. I later picked up a rear-mount rototiller for $10 at an auction. I still have all of it, but the Briggs won't start. Another "someday" project, I guess. I have no idea about today's prices.

Simplicity was one of the biggest manufacturers of two-wheeled tractors. They made them from the '40's to the early 70's. They can still be found if you are looking hard enough. Ebay usually has a couple per month. Simplicity also made many tractors for Montgomery Wards. Check out the yahoo site>Link

Not sure which brand of two wheel tractor you are remembering. I think the most popular and probably best made were the Gravely walk behinds. Gravely is still in business but no longer make the walk behinds you refer to. There is however a following for these early Gravelys that is similar to the 8N. I have both and often use the Gravely to clean out a light snow fall instead of using the N. Gravely made numerous implements (mower, snow blade, rotary plow, cultivator, sicklebar, etc.) to fit these two wheel tractors. A google search will tell you all you need to know about these machines. Parts are available and whole machines are often listed on e-bay. They are great little tractors.

this is mine, see link, my uncle had several, we just called them walk behind tractors. Used this setup to clear snow from driveway for several years until burned a valve.

I found one in the woods on my land in upstate NY. Looks very similar to this one but never bothered to look for a brand name. Of course it's missing the motor and is well weathered. But the mechanism still works because when I push it on the tires the shaft turns freely. Some day I'll retrieve it and use it as an ornament in front of the mobile home.

I grew up in a small town and it has been a long time since I have been back. But as a kid of 5 or 6, I rememebr the old gentleman next door coming over to our house for a visit... I think it had something to do with the fact that there were always fresh baked cookies in the house for us kids. Anyway, old Mr. Clark used a David Bradly as a motorized walker where ever he went...now that I am thinking about it he gave me my first jack knife

We had a David Bradley when I was a kid. The sickle bar mower worked great and it was ok with the cultivator implement. Even with wheel weights and chains it was too light to do much plowing. It was great fun to pull the sulky around but the problem was going down hill. Ours did not have the brake feature and they had ratchet drive on each end of the axle and it would flat out run away if you were not careful�don�t ask. My granddad had an old steel wheel machine but I can't remember what brand it was.
