Having difficulties getting starter in an out of tractor 1952 ford 8n.Seems as though the bendix is hitting on the flywheel and not letting the starter go in far enough .Any suggestions as to what could be the problem

You may also need to remove the two bolts holding the oil filter to allow additional room for the starter moter to navigate in position.....

I about went nuts working on a 2N I used to have. The starter clutch self destructed but removal was no problem. The starter shaft had gotten bent when the bendix bit the dust so I bought a new starter complete with bendix. That sucker would not go in over the flywheel. I ground out some more space on the bell housing. I tried standing on one foot holding my mouth several different ways. I switched to the other foot and repeated the process. I made loud comments regarding its ancestry and used words I didn't know that I knew. I finally found another style of bendix and it slipped right in.

You're not alone, quite a pain to do the first time. Oh, and the second and third also....

If it hasn't been done, it helps a lot to grind out a 1/4 inch or so of material at the 2 o'clock position of the hole, where you slide the bendix in and past the flywheel. Don't worry, there's plenty of material there, you won't miss it.

Even then, it takes some wiggling and jiggling to get it to slip past the flywheel. Some say you have to stand on one foot and hold your tongue just right, whatever you can do to get it to work! Keep at it, it'll eventually drop right past, and you'll wonder why the heck it was so difficult to do that.

I must have gotten lucky or the 2N's are built differently, but my flywheel housing and starter hole are factory egg-shaped to allow you to move the starter bendix off of the flywheel and then pull it out at a slight angle towards the engine.

I can see no grinding marks as if it were homemade, and it is perfectly symetrical, so I assume that it was done at the factory. I was pleased with how easily mine pulled out. All I can suggest is to just keep wiggling it until it evenutually comes out. And Obviously angle the free end of the starter towards the engine.
