We replaced the worn brake pads on Grandpa's 8N, but find that in tightening down the drum, it's catching on the edge of the new pads. Ground the inside of the drum smooth again, and the edges of the new brakes down a little more than 1/16", but doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions welcome - Thanks!!

Sounds to me like the hub/axle/splines may be so worn that the hub goes onto the axle farther than it should. Or there is some other reason that the axle/hub is too far in. This doesn't allow for enough room for the brake shoes.

You may have to grind more off the shoes. I had the same problem. It took several tries but eventually got it.

Will give it another try and let you know how we make out. Any ideas on why this is a problem? Is it "one size fits all" with these replacement shoes? Part number is right. Thanks!

Susan..... ....are you saying that you can't get the 8N's brake drum OVER the new brake shoes? Did you "retract" the brake adjusting "star" first? My memories of the star adjuster, it has lotts of adjustment to retract the shoes..... ....Dell

The drum goes on fine over the shoes, and even up over the backing felt which we also replaced. It's when we start tightening down the brake drum's screws that we notice that the wheel no longer turns freely, and the pedal moves w/the wheel, signifying that the brakes are essentially locked up inside the drum. Gonna try grinding some more off the pads/shoes and see if it helps. Could it be because it's now a "one size fits all" replacement pad/shoe?

Susan..... ...I agree, your brake drum shouldn't drag on the sides of the brake shoes. I assume that your brakeshoes are flush up against the axle backing plate? They should be. I usually do 1 brake at a time, so I can "compare" the new job with the old job and make certain I get it right.

I still gotta feeling, your brakeshoes arn't being supported correctly, (in a notch/groove) but without being able to eyeballin' it in person, you're gonnna haffta really inspect it yourself.

Used to be, you could get brake shoes "arched" ground to fit the brake drum at a real brake repair shop. You take both the brake shoes and the brake drum into the brake shop. Check your yellow pages for a real brake shop and call..... ...Dell
