I have been searching for a used disc harrow for some time. I located a used one at a dealer. It is a 5ft Pittsburgh disc harrow. They want $500.00 for it. There is very little wear, and absolutely no damage. It is very rusted, and almost no paint left on it, but it was red at one time. This harrow is also the type that is hard to adjust (remove bolts, adjust, and put bolts into new holes). Is $500.00 too high???

The also have a new harrow, international brand. The size is 6'6", and they want $695.00 for it.

I plan to use this harrow around the house to expand the size of the yard (over time), and to do a garden.

What do you guys think?? Should I go with the new?? Go with the old, and try for a better price?? Is that a good price??

I would go with the new.

At TSC you can get the same disc you are discribing for $516.97. The problem with used disc is did the owner keep up the maitaince. As OH Boy described below. If the bearings were never packed or the discs are overly rusty then you can easily spend $100's replacing parts and bearings.

There is a guy here at work that has a disc on the board for sale. It is a angle frame King Cutter (the above $516.97 model described) He wanted $450 for it. I went and looked. It was about like you described, had sunk into the dirt 3 inches so the bottom of the discs could not be seen. (we have acidic soil so that could mean dammaged discs) I offered $200.

He laughed me off. We parted in good grace and the disc is still on the board. No other takers for over a year.

Bottom line: I'd be leary of used equipment unless it is thourghly checked out and in good shape. Price should reflect repairs and time you must put into it.

Frank,

For that kind of money it should have a tractor attached to the front of it. Just kidding. I am not looking for a top of the line harrow that I would use every day. I am more interested in a light duty one.

How fancy a disk you gonna pull with an old Ford tractor? You might just know my neighbor, he bought a $4500 John Deere lawnmower. Sold his Cub Cadet to me for $600. Both still cut the grass about once a week.

I would like to thank everyone for thier input. I did feel that the price was high. I did like that it was more rugged than the new harrow. I also thought that the smaller one might be better, sounds like that arguement could go both ways. I will make him an offer ( somewhere between $250 - 350) and see what he says. If he wants to move it, then he will. The problem for me may be that it is the season to sell that equipment, so he can price it high.

Thanks again,
Fessman

That sounds high but the quality and features count for much of the cost. A 7 foot disc fits behind the n nicely. For gardening you will also want a bottom plow and a disc. I bought a new 6.5 foot disc brand new. $300 Wish I bought a bigger disc.

Not much, I have 5 acres of land and most of it is rutted up. I would like to smooth it out, grow grass, then sell the harrow. Currently the 5 acres is all field.

You might be better off to either go with a super cheap used one.. as a throw-away, as you only need it once... Or buy a new 4' one, as they are cheaper.. I've seen them new for under 500 at tractor supply... You could use it and sell it as almost new to recoup most of your money. Third alternative would be to hire the single job out.

When I first disc'ed 10 acres of my back pasture, it hadn't been turned in years, and was hard packed too much fo my little 6 foot disc. The neighbor down the road had a 12' disc.. came and turned it into 1 foot of soft powdery dirt for something like 125 bucks... then I could maintain it with my old small disc...

Might be worth the money. We have many 'tractor for hire' adds in our newspaper.. you might too. Would save going and buying one.. fixing and using and selling...

In my opinion, I look at purchasing used farm equipment the same way I look at purchasing used guns; if the price of a used one is over half of the cost of a new one, I don’t think it is a good deal. Buy the new one.:-) Rick H. Ga.

$500 does sound a little high for a used disc.
But the used one is the better size.
I bought an old 6.5' 3 pt. disc and pretty much rebuilt it last year.
But. I think it's a little too big for my 2N.
The tractor pulls it okay but, in order to get it to dig in a little better I'm going to have to add more weight to it. Trouble is it's about all my tractor wants to lift before the front wheels come off the ground. That's without the extra weight. There's 4 gangs of 6 disc wheels on it.
I plan to shorten it this spring to four gangs of 5 disc wheels.

Before I got so wealthy farming I used to have a drag behind dual tandem disk harrow that I had to drag from field to field. It was one of those converted 1494's (that's the year of manufacturer mind you.....not the model number) that you could squeeze a lever on a handle and as you pulled forward it would move from a straight across alignment to an angled configuration. That is after you got off the tractor and reconnected all the worn out pinned together linkages that have been replaced with baling wire. Once that field was disked you squeezed that nice little lever on that same handle, pushed back on the harrow with the tractor, and the disks either all go back into a straight across alignment or you go hunting for help to straighten back out the tongue of the harrow. Once straight across the harrow was very simple to drag to the next field. After all, with every disk acting like a wheel how could it get any easier? The only problem was....when you couple together the worn out bearings, the zing of the spring steel disc on the rocks, the endless metal on metal squeak of the scrappers on each disk, and all those moving adjusting metal parts banging together....well, needless to say....the preacher forbid me from moving my harrow while he was in the pulpit.....and the church was located 16 miles away!!!!! ! So between you and me...I went and bought me two of those fancy fandangled three point pick'em up types...adjusted one for angled and the other for finish and parked my drag type next to the fence. That was ten years ago.....the birds are coming back.....I've seen a few of the barn cats back in the hay loft....and they tell me if I'm real patient and keep up the farming....pretty soon I'll have enough money to have that there fancy surgery like Rush got!!

after shopping around i bought a new one. most used ones are junk and those that aren't the price is almost equal to a new disc.

Thats way too much for a used disc. You can get a new King Kutter for around that price.

I bought a used disc last year for $100, thought I couldn't go wrong, right. Well after I found a few parts (axles, bearings) that I had to replace I am not very far away from the price of a new one.

I'd buy a new one if I were you.
