I have a 1947 ford 8n and the hydraulics shake when lifting. I have noticed that on a hill after working for a while the lift seems to quit working. I then take it to a level spot and they work fine. what is my problem.help

It would require a very steep hill to uncover the pump inlet, unless the fluid level is very low. Have you checked to see that fluid is up to bottom bolt hole of right side inspection cover?

A pump that is jerky when lifting is not pumping on or more of the four pump cylinders. A pump rebuild is in your future. Post back for more info on pulling the pump.

That should be good enough. Most use bolt hole, because these tractors are so old, you never know what someone might have stuck in there to fill the dipstick hole.
Jerky operation is the symptom of one or more of the 4 cylinders of the pump not pumping.......however, I don't see a connection with that and the hill side position......all 4 cylinders share a common pump intake point.

I have had the pump out at one time to install a new relief valve. I never adjusted it or anything. It lifts very well and heavy loads too but on the hill it just will not lift after awhile.

I`m curious to know how yours turns out after you pull the pump, my 9N is doing the same with the shaking but it does it on level ground so please post your results.
Thanks,
Fred

Well I am going to pick up the repair kit and attempt to repair. I have no idea how but just remove the old and install the new. My question is are there instructions on repairing the pump. I have looked everywhere on line and nothing except a video. I don't have much money to waste. I bought a video on overhauling the engine and the part I needed most was blurry,. really sucked. please help just need step by step instructions. I know other folks have replaced the cylinders on the side of the pump. That is what I bought.
