'48 8N Excessive Steering Play

My '48 8N steering is very loose, about 1/4 to 3/8 of a turn of freeplay and about 90% of it is in the gear box. Can this be corrected by replacement of the bearings and bushings? Any idea of the cost?

Perhaps it might make more sense dollar wise to pick up a newer gear from a later 8N? Would anyone know if a later box would match the mounting on the earlier ones?

Thanks in advance for your comments and help.

On my 48N,I replaced the bushings in the gear box. The sector gears are not worn noticably. That took most of the play out. I've been told I'll never get all the play out, by several people. I'm working on the draglinks now. Have about an 1/8 turn play now. Much better than before. Seems the right side is the sloppy side. the left is pretty tight. Til I get the used draglink on I don't know if I'll get the play out or not. If you have to replace the sector gears, it might be better to replace the steering box. If you can find a good one of the same style. I'd try to find a later model. Adjustable is what the later ones are called. The 48 came with an unadjustable. Although it does have some adjustment. Not much. If you find a newer model, I think you have to change steering shaft, too. My .02 cents. HTH

As you hold the pitman arms steady with the steering centered, check the freeplay in the steering wheel. If it has a lot of backlash, loosen the 4 cap screws that hold the left side sector shaft bearing housing to the steering gear housing. Turn it and the metal gasket counterclockwise to the next set of matching holes. replace and tighten the 4 cap screws. Then repeat on the right side, except you rotate the housing cover clockwise. You may need to go more than one set of holes to get the freeplay out. If the adjustment won't fix the problem, you'll need to repair or replace the box. A later model box will fit.
