What tractor should this hood/grill be on?

Hello,
I have a 1949 8N. That's what the serial on the engine side tells me. Everything seems to be 8N but the hood and grill. I heard all 8Ns have the Ford script on it. Mine does not. Please look at attached two pictures. Do these help place the hood/grill with a certain tractor? What would be the correct color of these two emblems? thanks for looking.

The four slot grill first appeared early in 1942. 8N's were the first with Ford script on the hood above the head lamps.

Thanks Dollar Bill. Therefore this is a 2N hood and grill? Why do you suppose that it is on an otherwise 8N?

And, since the Ferguson system on mine is red and looks like the Ford had some red too, someone painted them inappropriately - or was red an option?

Original hood could have rusted out or a tree fell across it??

Not aware of optional emblem colors. They all came off assembly line pretty much the same. Most options were added at the dealership.
 
Can you post more pictures of the entire tractor? I would posture that you have a 9N or 2N that as had the engine swapped out with an 8N one. The 9N/2N grilles did not pivot out for cleaning of radiator which means the hood and doglegs would be fitted for it as well. I don?t think you have had the hood and doglegs replaced, but more pictures will help determine that. It is only my theory that you have an 8N engine in a 2N tractor. Do you have a 3-speed or a 4-speed transmission? ALL 9N/2N badges were FORD BLUE background and chromed text. The FORD script emblem was on top with the ?FERGUSON SYSTEM? badge below. The FORD 8N badge was Vermillion background and chromed text and introduced the flip-out grille.

well Tim, I had considered that maybe I did not have an 8N or at least a complete one. Attached are a few more pictures. I think on this site history or elsewhere I came across that the 8N went to 8 lugs on the rear wheels which I have and that I also have the two brake pedals side by side on the right side of the tractor which I also heard was an 8N indicator. I was worried so just went back to look to see if I had a 3 or 4 speed. My picture does not show them all. It is 4. R - 4 - 1 on the top and 2 - 3 on the bottom. And I have the Starr adjusting screw on the brakes which I thought was another 8N indicator. I have a front mount distributor. I just read that maybe the Ford script on any hood or fender did not take place until 1950. The two fenders each has a Ford script. Sounds like the previous owner or prior painted the emblem red.
Let me know if I should take another pic of a certain item to help with the identification. thanks for looking. Oh, I have the tires off as my project #2 and #3, brakes and axle seals are under way.

Tractor is an 8N. Hood is from earlier model. 8N hood has a louvered door with a screen and "funnel" inside to take air into the air cleaner on the side where the air cleaner is. Yours appears to have a decal in that location.

Not to mention the removable brake drums. I agree, 8N with earlier hood.
1948-mid '50 since the generator is on the right hand side w/ front mount
distributor. There may be date codes on cast into the hydraulic pump or rear
axle trumpets that might help narrow it down. But, they are changeable too.

As far as I know, the 8N always had the script on the hood, but not on
the fenders until the later models. The fenders do interchange though.
 
Well, I'll be. It is an 8N except for the hood, doglegs, and grille. Those pictures are fine for determination. It seems like a lot of work to acquire those parts if replacing unless one already had them at hand and wanted to save some $$$. If they were gotten otherwise, why not just get the correct parts? Ford rear Hat Rims and subsequent aftermarket rims are all 6-LOOP style and will interchange from a 9N/2N to an 8N and beyond. It is the center discs and wheel hubs that differ. The 9N/2N wheel hubs had an inner 6-Bolt Hole pattern on a 11.25" radius and the 8N rear hubs and beyond had an 8-Bolt Hole Pattern on a 6" radius. The rear center discs do not interchange from a 9N/2N to an 8N and beyond. Hat Rims never changed. ALL 9N/2N and early 8N's up to s/n 263844 in April, 1950, had the front mount distributor, so that is NOT an 8N identifier, simply a possible early 8N one. In April 1950, beginning with s/n 263844, the 8N changed to the angle mount (side distributor) revamping and moving the generator to the LH side. At this time the FORD script was added to the fenders. The FORD script on the HOOD was NEVER a 9N/2N feature -it was introduced on the 8N Tractor in July, 1947 from it's initial release, and not in 1950. Another 8N hood identifier is the air cleaner vent on the rear RH side near the dash. 9N/2N hoods never had an air cleaner vent so it is plain stamped steel there. It appears you have an 8N chassis that has had all the sheet metal replaced. The hood, doglegs, and grille coming from a 2N and the fenders coming from a 1950-1952 8N. Congratulations, you have bragging rights to a "MUTT"!!! Fear not, there are many around. The important factors to know are that you have a front mount distributor, a 4-speed tranny, 8N Hydraulics, meaning you also have POSITION CONTROL in addition to the standard DRAFT CONTROL system. I see a Voltage Regulator, ballast resistor, and a 6V battery which means you should also have generator. Just ensure the setup is wired correctly. Thanks Tim and all you others for taking the time to respond with your helpful information and confirmations. I will check out the added info references. I guess I should have been more particular 10 years ago when seeking out a tractor. My son has a '51 I think with script all around; side mount distributor and air cleaner vent in the hood and even, I think, the right sized tires.
Anyway, I'll hopefully make the tractor better than when I bought it and see where it goes from there. If the sheet metal is good, sometimes I see auctions where I might get replacements for a decent price and get the tractor closer to an all around '49. Someone would probably want a 2N hood.
Now I know I have loop rims, so that is helpful to know.
Since I changed out the fuel system (mine even came with a fuel filter which I omitted) rebuilt the carb, new plugs and wires, it starts very easy, so hopefully that means the wiring is correct - but you guys can burst my bubble if you want.

no real concerns. by better, I meant repairing leaks, new brakes and rubber and installing wiring for lights. I'm happy I got it running and it has good oil pressure as I really did not want to mess with the engine or transmission for that matter.
 
hello again.
on another post of mine talking about removing broken/spinning front wheel studs, today, when I looked at my bearings, I noticed that the head of the studs all have a flat side and each (the ones that don't spin) are set against a ridge on the hub.
I looked up a 2N stud and a picture came up with this flat side on the head. It did not appear when I looked up an 8N stud. But my son who has a '51 8N sent me pictures of his and they too have flat sides.
So are studs interchangeable - or they all have that flat side to it.
Are hubs interchangeable too? Can a 2N go on an 8N?
As I cleaned out the inside of each hub, I noticed they are different. The right side, picture attached, shows just two slots, opposite each other ( 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions on the picture. Whereas the left hub has four of these slots. Does this mean anything?
So wondering about the flat sided stud heads and the differences in hubs.
