I have the opportunity to get a 9n with a backhoe and front bucket attachment, I couldn't see the front bucket so I don't know if it's on there or not but I'm told it has one. I've seen quite a few 2,9 and 8ns but never any with a backhoe. I was wondering if this was a pretty common thing or if it would be more of a homemade thing. Thanks

A number of companies made them over the years. Sherman is probably the most common but I have seen and heard of others. Like the Scout I have in the picture. Oh by the way with out a loader on one you will not move it with a back hoe on it

Thanks for the info, I know this one didn't have the loader on it because I could see the whole hood and grill. It's kind of back in the brush and I didnt stop and look just slowed down when I drove by, I've been driving by it my whole lifebut never really paid attention before, I think the front bucket is laying next to it though.

The one in the picture is a late 1950 8N that has the side mount distributor. The front end loader is a deerborn and the back hoe is a Scout made in Shawnee KS. It is old and slow but sure beats a shovel and wheel barrow any day of the week

Compared to the one I have that one looks to be real light. The Scout I have is very heavy and will dig a hole to about 18 foot or so. I got it stuck years ago and turned the whole rig all the way around with the back hoe so I could then drive out of the mud I had gotten it stuck in

(quoted from post at 20:48:09 02/27/11) You need a front loader to balance some backhoe attachments, but mine get's around just fine without a front loader.

Did you change your name!?!?

Hmmm, I think I know that backhoe (from pics).

And the initials fit........

Yep, Mine will only dig down about 6 feet but most of my digging has been in the 3-4 foot range, so it does everything I need it to do. If I need to go deeper I'd just dig the hole big enough to get the rig in there, GRIN. Mine also has no trouble picking up the rear tires and moving the tractor.

Much great info there!!

When I say I was stuck I guess I should have filled in the blanks more. I had it down in the mud so bad it was sitting on its belly up front and the only thing keeping it from going down deep in back was the hoe its self. I had to reach out with the boom and dig in and lift the front tires up and out of the holes they where in and swing the front end around sbout a foot at a time then do the back end and ketp that up till I had it 180 from where I started. Took hours to do but at east I got it out

No doubt that a loader is the optimum choice for counter weight, but mine does just fine in 1st and 2nd gear with about 200 lbs of additional weight on the front and the bucket raised to the transport position. 3rd gear is a little scary on anything other than smooth pavement and 4th gear brings the front end off the ground in a heartbeat!

good book on Amazon; Wain-Roy and the invention of the backhoe

it's normal for a bumped thread to be moved back up to the top of the list in modern view, but what's not normal is that someone would go to the effort of searching for and digging up a topic that's seven years old to start with. is that spam i smell?
