Wondering Why People Do Some Things

This 8N for sale is about an hour from me, not affiliated in any way. Just thought the placement of the ceramic resistor might be a first! If it were mine, I would knock it off or burn my leg the first time I used it; but at 6'5" I'm always bumping my knees on something. Just wondering why people do some strange things...

That is an interesting location. For those who didn't know, Ford offered a cigar lighter accessory on 8Ns that would fasten under the tool box. I did not know that until early 2000. My father installed one through the dash from a 6 volt car back in 1953. I thought it was unique. We also had a horn just in front of the air cleaner with a button on the side of the steering column.

granted, mine's a 2N, but in the pic of the ballast resistor, you'd see the temperature gauge i attached to the end of the tool box, right behind where that wire loom is (-:0

I wonder why it has a resistor at all.
It's a side mount with a round can coil. 12V coils are cheap.

Not ballast resistor at all and not a 48. 50 at the oldest.

It's amazing how many cobbled up wiring jobs are out there. There was a guy here a few weeks ago with an N that had a stnd household 120 VAC light switch mounted for his on/off key switch. Also as noted, it is post s/n 8N-233844 as Proofmeter and angle mount distributor are shown.

I had a horn on a riding lawnmower I used to have. I used it to order beer. If one of the kids didn't show with one pronto when they heard the horn, they had to come out and help in the yard. Worked every time!

ok, i'll bite. what is it then?
It is a fixed resistor to drop the voltage from 12 to 6 volts for the coil. A ballast resistor changes resistance when it heats up, like the one behind the dash with the front mount distributors. Low resistance when starting and higher when hot to reduce the current flow to protect the coil.

probably to jump across the resistor when starting, without leaving the seat......
Agree with you about the knee thing. I had one N that had a toggle switch in the left side of the dash. First time I backed up and impaled my knee......I moved it.

I have looked at many ford and ferguson tractors over the last 35 years. whenever I looked at one that was converted to 12V I walked away.

except i haven't found any source that agrees with that.

for example:

An electrical ballast is a device placed in line with the load to limit the amount of current in an electrical circuit. It may be a fixed or variable resistor.

if u can cite a source that specifies fixed resistance, i'll be happy to look at it. until then, i will continue to call those "ceramic blobs" ballast resistors :)
