I replaced the points and the rotary, but the rotary breaks every time I try to start the engine. What do you think the problem is.

ap not indexed/seated properly, rotor not fully seated, wrong parts or crappy parts.

Caps and rotors from different manufacturers have been reported to do that.
Also "might" happen if you're missing the little clip on the shaft under the rotor.

Welcome to the forum.

More info required. Is it a front mount distributor or an angle(side) mount? Is it 6V/POS GRN or 12V/NEG GRN? If a front mount, was the distributor points timing set correctly AND was the unit reassembled to the engine timing gear mount correctly? There is an offset female tang on the gear, and an offset male tang on the distributor. The mating is very important. If not exactly correct, you will destroy the distributor. Point gap is .015" - .017". If the rotor, not rotary, that's a civic club...; > ) isn't fully seated down on the shaft, it may break, but if not seated, the cap shouldn't even be allowed to fully seat on the body face. Timing instructions for the front mount and/or side mount is in the manuals.

It is a side mount. I have ordered another rotor to try again. I do not have a manual.

Albert638, welcome to the forum. I would suggest you do like Royce said, order a cap and rotor. It could be that the replacement rotor is taller than the original. If it was me, I would pull the distributor after noting where the rotor is pointing, put the cap on loosely and turn the distributor shaft and see if the rotor lifts or tries to move the cap. Let us know what you find.

I have been running my 50 side mount for 20 years with numerous point and rotor and cap changes with no problems. I usually get my parts from here or NAPA. MAKE YOU HAVE THE CLIP ROYSE TALKED ABOUT.

I got a new rotor and put it together this morning and everything is working fine, I have no idea why the 2 previous rotors broke. Thanks everyone for your input.
