8n Rear Seals

Back for more guidance ... when I got into the brakes I noticed a part of my problem may well be a pretty good
fluid leak ... I pulled up John Smith's step by step guide only to get stuck figuring out which seals I needed
... as far as I can tell the only seal I actually had on the tractor was the outer seal ... but according to
serial # I should also have the inner seal (50-52) ... I guess it is possible that the inner wasn't replaced at
some point? But before I go ordering and trying to figure how it all fits back together I thought I'd ask for
some guidance ... here is a picture of the outer seal and where I believe the inner seal should fit ...

Here's the picture ... (I hope)

nner seal goes into the end of the axle housing (trumpet) before installing any of those parts in your picture. Does your axle have only a cast surface behind the bearing or a couple of inches of smooth machined surface?

Thanks JMOR - took me a bit to get back to the farm to snap a pic ... if I read you right, behind the bearing would be the spot, there
is a smooth area, but I wouldn't call it a couple inches ... that what you were expecting to see being that is is a later model by
serial #?

Nope. See both axles here, w/o inner seal area & with inner seal area, as well as the seal in end of trumpet.

So short of needing a lot of cleanup, I finally know where the inner seal is supposed to go ... but now I am wondering if this is
actually a pre-50 rear end ... in the photo you uploaded it looks like there is a lip in with the inner seal and I don't seem to have a
lip ... or does the inner seal just slide in and catch as the axle opening narrows?

Thanks for all of this help ... I never imagined the difficulty of this job would be in figuring out which parts to get!

say that your axle housing is too old for the inner seal.

I'm starting to think it's a newer engine on an older body ...engine serial # is 442055 ... it sure looks like the axle is pre-50 from
your pic as well - since it doesn't have that smooth machining on the back side of the bearing ... I'll rebuild it as pre 50 without the
inner seal and see what happens ...

Thanks again for all of your help.

Thanks HFJ ... the answer was right there 6 inches from where I was working ... 1949 in the casting ...
