Daddy's 1950 8N

You might as well say I am the tractors little sister, Daddy had it first, hell the tractor was older than mom too :D but now I have inherited his 8N. I literally grew up on the back of this tractor and knew that it was the only thing I ever wanted when he was gone. Unfortunately him and mom both passed away recently and I've had it at my house a few months now and any time I have had issues I've read the forum and fixed things easily - like the resonator and relearning all the levers! I'm lucky that he had it restored about 10 years ago, so now I'm just facing a few minor details - tonight I'm replacing the fuel bowl, ignition, start button. I want to put a little weight on the front end of it, even on easy starts on a slight grade the front end is lifting on me. I'm sure I'll be back often looking for answers or bragging that I fixed something with your help.

I'll take all the advice I can get!!

Under "Classified Ads" in Market Place, above left. a seller has front weights for a Ford but he does not specify if they are for
an 8N or 9N. He is in Missouri. I have a set for a 9N weights mounted on hubs that are for sale, $100. I'm in Michigan.

You got this!
I know when I get a new-to-me tractor, I always want to do XYZ.
Best advice I can give you as a new owner, besides getting the
manuals and actually reading them, is do X and test, then do Y
and test again, then do Z. Don't change a bunch of things at once.
Doing so can introduce problems that weren't there when you started.

Don't skip the Operator/Owner's manual. There is a lot of
information in that manual that isn't readily available in the others.

The folks on this forum are a wealth of knowledge.
They have helped me immeasurably.

HiYa Lil' Sister, Angie, and welcome aboard. One good rule to follow is don' start replacing old parts with new until it is determined the old is defective. If you don't already have the essential manuals, get them. They are a valuable tool to have -every bit as important as any wrench. I don't know what a "resonator" is on an N Tractor -clarification needed. Wheel weights can be used on the front -need the 16" wheels and 5.50 or 6.50 16" tires plus the Ford 2-piece weight sets. They add 90# per side. Beet juice works very well too. Read SAFETY chapter too in the Operator's Manual. Ascending and descending slopes is where accidents can occur.

Ns don't normally lift the front when starting off unless there is a fairly heavy/long load on the back. What are you carrying on the back.

Re: Front end lifting on easy starts.. If your front end raises when pulling, your hitch point on the tractor is to high. Get that fixed right away, it's dangerous.Do you have the 11 hole drawbar and the staybars that go from the the top link mounting point to each end of the drawbar and lift arms. If so, the drawbar should be no more than 20 inches from the ground maybe less. I can't find the manual that came with the tractor right now. If you have the drawbar that mounts under the differential, it should not be a problem. My father bought a new Ford 8N on July 8,1950 and its still in the family, my son has it in Wisconsin now.

I never thought of trying a higher gear, but that makes sense now that you mention it!!

Let us know how you're using the tractor and what implements you're using... there are safe operating techniques for different use cases. Look forward to hearing more as you bring it back on line!

Angie, Hank, my 8N, has the same front bumper that Ed S. has and I hang IHC suitcase weights on it when I use my jib pole. It keeps the front end on the ground and makes it steer well when something's hanging on the back. Enjoy! gm
