My new / old 52 8n

Since I'm doing A 12v conversion, full tune up and a new carb, looks like removing the hood might be helpful. I see 4 bolts around the dash and the 2 on each side of the grill at the bottom. Did Ford put in any secret bolts or clips I should know about. Also, I understand volts better than amps. What about changing ammeter to volt meter? Doesn't appear the ammeter is even working anyway. Maybe the 12v battery in a 6v system. Wiring is pretty buggered up. Kinda surprised it even runs. Thanks

no secret bolts. u only need to pull 2 of those 4 side bolts, the other 2 hold the grille to the doglegs.

with the 4 dash bolts and those 2 bolts pulled, u can lift up the hood and doglegs + grille as a single unit. have a helper and don't forget to disconnect the fuel line.

If you don't have a helper (as I generally do not), you can decrease the weight a bunch by draining the gas tank. You can reduce it a small amount by removing the grill. It is not that it is so heavy, it is jsut very awkward to lift off by yourself and being a back sufferer, I try every advantage I can get. It is much easier to clean up and work on things without the hood in the way. You can easily adapt an old lawn mower gas tank to supply fuel to test run and tune up before reinstalling the hood assembly.

Glad I asked. Did not even think about the gas tank! Headlights don't even have wires going to them. Maybe my wife is feeling strong today! Off to NAPA to get the one coil they have in stock.

Mine only has 2 bolts on the front at the bottom. The grill is held in by clips. Must have been one of those innovative features when they moved distributors to the side or something like that.

Two bolts in front, four on the dash. Disconnect fuel line at the carb. Remove the radiator cap. I had to lift the front up and wiggle the rear to get it away from the steering wheel then the whole thing can be picked up and lifted off.

Emptying the gas tank makes it a lot easier. My tank was almost full and the sediment bowl was totally clogged. Nothing around to siphon the tank and no one available to lend a hand. It was a little heavy to remove, but doable. Lift & snatch. :D

Removing the steering wheel makes it easier , if the steering wheel is not stuck on the shaft . If the wheel is stuck it can be very difficult to remove and may not be worth the effort . All of my tractors get a healthy dose of anti seize on the splines for easy removal in the future .
