My new / old 52 8n

Bought a '52 8n (sn 8N492803) about 3 weeks ago. It's pretty much all original, except someone has messed with the wiring and as most do, needs a little love. Actually still has the original paint.
Still is 6v, but has a 12v battery negative ground. Didn't even know you could do that. I've changed the seat and steering wheel.
Have new lower lift bars, 12v conversion kit, tune up kit and a new carb on the way. It appears the coil is still original (remnants of old red paint). Can I use this one, or should I replace it with a new 12v? Can I just pick up one at an auto parts store?
Sorry about probably obvious questions, but everything I know about 8n's I've learned in the last 2 months! Any guidance and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jim

See tip # 30 re the coil.

Unless you want measure the internal resistance of the 6v coil & calculate the correct resistance needed for that 6v coil, I'd just go to NAP and buy a 12v coil, IC14SB part number.

AlabamaJim sounds like we are in the same boat except mine is older. I have the same battery/ charging system you have going on with yours. Going to spend some time with mine this weekend to get a better idea what I got. Bought some 15/40 and a Napa 1010 filter to start with.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new tractor!

I'm with Bruce on the 12V conversion. If you're going to do it, use
a true 12V coil, NAPA IC14SB or equivalent and eliminate the extra
resistors and connections that can corrode and cause problems.

What are your plans for the original carb? I'd gladly pay the shipping
if it's an original Marvel Schebler and you want to get rid of it.

Hey Alabama Jim, are you located
in Alabama? If so where? I live
near Sylacauga in Talladega
county. I know a guy that will
rebuild your old carb. he redid a
carb off a 960 for me and also a
super C carb for a friend. I think
the C carb a had been in a pond
for a while! Lol. Give me a
holler. Email open

The shop I use is in lineville. Always heard that rebuilding the original carb beats any new one you can buy. Maybe worth putting new one on and getting the old one rebuilt ,just in case
