8N Pump fluid change

New to the 8N world, just purchased my first one and had a question that i am sure someone can answer. On the bottom of the hydraulic pump housing there appears to be a drain plug pointing towards the exhaust. When removed no fluid came out. Then drained it through the normal means (the large drain plugs). Also should I flush this out with something, a fair amount of water seemed to be present.

Check out tip # 39. You need the manuals. That "drain plug" pointing toward the exhaust pipe isn't a drain plug. It's th test port.

See tips 3 & 4. You missed the pipe plug under the rear end.

You would be wise to drop the pump and clean it out. Post back if you want advice on doing that.

Bruce, I just dropped the hydraulic pump on my 9N today. I would appreciate any information on cleaning it properly. I purchased a new pump control valve an a new hydraulic relief valve. I just finished rebuilding the top cylinder and wanted to clean out all the oil and dirt build-up, before adding new gear oil.

Take out the valves and then drop it in a bucket of your favorite solvent for a good overnight soak. Then, blow out all the chambers w/ compressed air. Sometimes it takes another good soaking to get it clean. Make sure you can get good air flow though all the ports.

The tractor hydraulic system supplies both the 3-pt lift and transmission lubrication from the same sump. There are 3 plugs for the system. One way to properly drain the system. Read more before attempting -plenty of info in archives...
