deere to n series

i am moving my jd#9 sickle bar mower to my 8n from my jd40(selling), realized my 8n pto shaft size was 1 1/8 i believe and my john
deere 40 was larger probably 1 3/8? is there an adapter available or should i replace the 1 3/8 knuckle to 1 1/8?
thanks dave

Put a PTO Override Clutch on your tractor you probably need the extra length that it will give you.Don't really need a ORC for a cycle mower but it will make things work better and you will have it for other uses.

Keep the jd and sell the 8N. :D

i hear ya geiger but it seems john deere 40's are getting more money than 8n's and my 8n has a sherman hi/lo tranny, plus i have a
set of arp tracks with bogie wheels with it, wife says "get rid of some tractors!!!" everything else i have is ford.
seems like i'm real good at buying but not so good at selling

I'm the same way. I never seem to make out when I sell something. I have a redundancy in my tractors right now and I decided to sell the 8N. I hope to break even selling it, but most likely will loose money.

I use to mow with a #9 on my 52 8N. I always keep the ORC on it anyway and the mower did a good job.

The cheapest way to go is with the 1-1/8 to 1-3/8 sleeve adaptor -see picture -sold everywhere they sell tractor parts. The original N-Series PTO shaft was at the time the industry standard of 1-1/8" Splined. The NAA introduced the new 1-3/8" splined ASAE PTO shaft and implements. It's advisable when using a mower or brush hog to use an ORC with an N for safety. Swapping out your original PTO shaft with the newer 1-3/8" one is your call. Know too that they only make the 1-3/8" PTO shaft nowadays. If you use the adaptor as shown, be sure to use a shear pin. I use the basic brass locking square linch pin.
