8n starting problem

Just got my first 8n about 2 weeks ago did not run when I got it. Bought a new 6 volt battery and did the normal cleaning of the gas tank lines etc. went to try and fire it up and the engine would barely turn over. Thought maybe a new starter would help but just put it on and still barely turns over. So any ideas? Next steps? Any help would be much appreciated as I am no mechanic by any means lol thanks in advance

LT,Charge your new 6 volt battery as it could have been setting around awhile and is low on charge,Fully charge it up (6 volt charger) and try it again.

Yes sorry fogot to put in there that the battery was at full charge when I started. I had it on a 6volt trickle charger for a day or so to make sure it was up to par for when the starter arrived.

LT,Get the engine ready to start, good fire at the plugs, gas through the carb. Then jump it at the starter with 12 volts key on and try to start it.Maybe after it runs awhile it will start easily with 6 volts.

Clean both ends of both battery cables. If any doubt about condition of the cables replace them with good heavy ones.

If the ground cable is connected to the battery holder, get a long enough cable to ground it to the cast frame as near to starter as possible

LT,does it have any oil pressure when cranking over, remove all 4 plugs and see if oil pressure comes up while cranking.

LT,You need to get it to have oil pressure while cranking before you start it up.I have my suppositions no oil pressure from the past life is why it is hard to crank over.Any history on it?

Not much other than it ran when parked about 20 years ago. Starting to think I got in over my head.

LT,You can try priming up the oil pump and see if it will carry oil pressure when cranking over.Just use a pump up sprayer the best or even a pump oil can will work to prime it up.Just remove the oil line from the gauge and hook a rubber fuel line to the line and to the sprayer or oil can with like 20w50 oil in it pump about a 1/2 -1 pint of oil in then remove the hose from the line, crank over and see if oil comes out of the line.If so then it will have oil pressure when you hook the gauge back up.

I will give that a try thanks for the info I will let you know how it goes. Also should the starter be counter clockwise or clockwise rotation?

LT The starter will only run one way, with out changing a bunch of parts, engine turns clockwise looking from the front. The starter turns clockwise looking from the bendix end.

Get the essential manuals and read read read -best to do before you buy. Stop replacing parts. Stop guessing. Root cause problem solving. 6V/POS GRN or 12V NEG/GRN -it doesn't matter squat unless it is all wired correctly. A 'new' battery means nothing. They can be junk out the door. Battery must meet specific gravity specs -sustain a full charge under load. Don't know what you mean by 'normal cleaning of gas lines'. Fresh gas -OK. Carb fuel flow test performed? Do you have a generator or an alternator? A voltage regulator too? GEN/VR -used with generator. ALT -no VR -used with 12V. Tune-up in future, but clean points now.75 tips/ WIRING PICTOGRAMS -in addition to the essential manuals ---

Your 6 volt will not turn it over very fast. I have a 6 volt on my naa. it doesn't turn over very fast but it starts by the 2nd revolution after I bought a new carb for it. there cheap now. pull one plug out. hook the plug wire up and lay it on the motor so it will be grounded. don't hold on to it but turn your motor over and see what kind of a spark you can see on the end of the plug. if you don't have a good spark then you will have to fix that first. if you do then buy a new carb. you can rebuild your carb for around 30 bucks. new carb is less than 60 bucks. don't install the new starter yet. you might be able to get your money back. if you want it to turn over faster you will have to convert to 12 volt. can be done with a 50 dollar alternator and of course a new 70 dollar 12 volt battery. good luck on your tractor

If your do try to jump with 12 volt do not leave cables on long just long enough to see if it turns over , I have done it that way and it will turn over good .
and norm it will start if everything else is ready.

I hope you get it started, I have hauled over 3000 of these things to the scrap yard, most for the very reason
you are having. People get tired of continuously spending money on them trying to get them to start and run.
If you get it running, Don't forget the brakes and a good over running PTO clutch. Doc said my back is
getting better,I may be back to hauling them in the next few months.

"I am no mechanic by any means"

You don't need to be much of a mechanic to make an N run.
Especially with all the helpful folks here on this forum.
You'll get it going.

If it sat for many years, I would soak the rings before even trying.
Marvel Mystery oil or Automatic transmission fluid in the cylinders.
A teaspoon or two in each and let it soak for a few days or a week.
While it's soaking, clean both ends of both battery cables.

It's a 6V system, so those cables need to be as big around as your
ring finger or close. Wimpy 12V car cables will not cut it on 6 volts.
0 or 00 gauge wires preferred. 2 gauge minimum.
No need to run right out and buy parts though.
It can be jumped as stated. Then work on getting it starting better.
