Determining the year from casting numbers?

I have a 2N with an 8N engine. When I got it, I had researched it to some degree and determined it was made sometime in 1944 or later. I don't recall what helped me determine that, but it made sense at the time. Something to do with the foot pegs maybe? In any case, I've wondered if I could determine the year by casting numbers or date codes found elsewhere on the tractor. Any ideas?

That's exactly what it was. It slipped my mind. I looked at the numbers visible on the front side of the rear axle housing and it says A140. I don't know if there are any other numbers there. Does the A140 mean anything?

i'm pretty sure i've read that casting dates on the axle trumpets started in 1947. my 47's trumpets are dated january 2 and 3. a lack of date there, along with the oval radius rods, points to mid 44 thru the end of 46, i think.

(assuming your engine's the only thing that's been swapped ;) )

It's a 2n mid '44/'47. Check under the tractor on the hydraulic
pump there might be a production code date. There were basically
no changes between those years so the year is not important for
