Majik Paint

My kids gave me 2 quarts of Majik enamel red paint for my tractor, they gave me paint, reducer and hardener with the paint. I usually use PPG paint and I am thinking about using this Majik enamel. I have heard some of these paints fade or turn orange or pink after a while. Has anyone used this Majik paint before and how does it hold up

Skip,It might be better to ask over on the Paint and Bodywork board as many have used Majik paints over there. I have painted a lot and never used Majik paints, always used DuPont,Martin Senior,Drexlar ECT.

I bought quarts and spray cans when Tractor Supply changed from Val-spar to Majic. Quarts were very thin (almost ready to spray) and spray cans did not hide well either. Not sure about durability as I washed it all off with thinner and resprayed with a better quality paint.

YMMV

It is a low VOC paint and slow to dry. Not in a class with any PPG product. Seems to hold up OK. I use the aerosol cans for small parts but would not use it for anything larger.

IMHO the MAJIK brand is junk. I believe MAJIK is the in-house brand sold now at TSC. Back about 2009 or so TSC was selling the VALSPAR brand and year ago sold the TISCO brand. Both are alkyd oil based enamels -decent paint for the budget minded. At the changeover, the TSC's in my area had a fire sale depleting their old VALSPAR stock, offering great deals on discounted products, like half price per can. I then purchased a few cans of their MAJIK FORD RED paint and proceeded to paint my trailer with it. It went on OK, looked OK, but when I returned the next day, it had turned to an orangy-red shade, nowhere near the Ford Vermillion red I wanted. I had to repaint the whole tractor again with TISCO IH RED TP110, which is what I wanted to do in the first place but figured I'd try something new. I never bought another MAJIK product after that. I'd try testing it a small part or two first and be your own judge.

If you want fade resistance avoid alkyd enamels altogether. Regardless of brand they all fade when exposed to sunlight - some more quickly than others. Use a good two part urethane product instead.

I've used quite a bit of it. Mixed correctly, with hardener, it goes
on smooth and dries relatively quickly. Spray version, not the
rattle cans. They take forever to dry. I'm talking days, not hours.

Unfortunately, most of the Ford tractors I've used it on haven't
stuck around long enough to give you a good opinion on fading.

The Farmall's I've used it on still look great after four years or so,
but they're Farmalls, so they set in the barn unless we take them
to a show. They rarely see sunlight other than that.

If your tractor is shedded, I wouldn't be afraid of it.

My observation is that it looses its luster and fades quickly, even sitting in the shed, it seems. Next time I paint a tractor ; after all the labor spent in prep, I'll try something else.

I use 2150 Rouge Red from CNH its the Red on Royce's Farmall it looks great on a Ford and holds up well. I have not brought any in 5/6 years from CNH the price at that time was competitive to other brands :)...
