8N Air Cleaner

I have a 1948 8N and it had a cyclone air cleaner on it when I bought it. I have seen some with and some without, but didn't see anything in the FO-4 manual about it.

Did they come with this from the factory or did some add it on later?

The Cyclone Air Pre-Cleaner Unit was an optional Ford Tractor dealer accessory made and supplied by AIRCLEANER SERVICES, of Oregon and Colorado. There were three different ones made for Ford Tractors, but they also had other models made for Farmall, A-C, and a few other makes. There was a unit for the 9N/2N tractor; a unit for the 8N model, and another for the Jubilee/600-800 and none interchanged with the other. Accessories that Ford offered were under license by them. The page shown below is from the 1948-1950 Dearborn Accessory Parts catalog. No standard Ford Owner/Operator manual except the 600/800 lists accessories, but the Cyclone isn't one of them. They are detailed in the Dearborn Accessory and later Ford Tractor & Implement Division catalogs. Dennis Carpenter Reproductions makes all the parts for the 8N and NAA Cyclone Air Pre-Cleaner EXCEPT the bodies themselves. The Cyclones ha d their own 1/2-pint glass jar, but were designed to use any standard 1/2 pint canning jar so a BALL, KERR, or MASON jar will work. Here is a 9N/2N Cyclone model instruction sheet -NOTE: they are not the same as the 8N nor NAA model...models do not interchange because air cleaners are all different. The early 9N/2N models are hard to find.

No, it only reduced the cylinders from 4 to 2... ; > ) Also, the Cyclone Air Pre-Cleaners did exactly what they were developed to do -they trapped dirt and debris before getting into the tractor air cleaner and thus extending the cleaning maintenance schedule on the OEM air cleaner. Seems this jar has trapped some serious debris...

Not aftermarket, an actual FORD/DEARBORN MOTORS part. As with all accessories and implements, manufactured by outside suppliers under contract to Ford. Parts carried their own Ford/Dearborn part numbers.
