hydraulic pump knocking

My first 8N and new to the forum. When I lift the arms I hear a slight knocking sound when it approaches the top. It has no trouble lifting, however.
I have a 5600 and have had several 960 Fords and have never heard that noise from any of them.
The oil appears fresh, so don't really want to change it. It appears to be hydraulic oil, not the gear oil the manual recommends.
Is this noise normal for a 8N?

These days it should be a combination fluid that meets Ford New Holland ESN-M2C134-D specification. Especially if you plan on using your tractor when it hits 10°F or colder. The one problem is that if your tractor leaks, it may leak even more with this fluid.

If you live in a warm climate or don't expect it to ever get that cold, gear oil may be OK.

Now that I've opened this can of worms, expect plenty of discussion.

I did notice some oil seeping through the PTO seal. I was thinking I might switch to gear oil since it won't be used in the winter, but decided to replace the seal instead since the oil looks fresh. So far that's the only place I've noticed any leakage.

Your N series tractor has a scotch yoke pump, much unlike your later model Ford tractors.

It is not uncommon for such pumps to knock when under load once they have significant wear. Such knocking is no cause for concern so long as the lift works properly.

Yes, changing to 90W (GL-1 or GL-5) would likely reduce the knocking and the propensity to leak at the expense of poor cold oil performance.

Thanks. Sounds like I just have to learn to ignore it. It lifts the woods rotary cutter with no problems.

Nice flames! Looks like an Evo, too.
Mine is still pretty stock except for the police seat.
Couldn't handle sitting that high. It did ride nice on it though.
