1952 8N Front Tires Rubbing 6.00 x 16

Ok, I bet quite a few of you have ran into this and can share some knowledge. I bought a 1952 8N that has larger front tires (6.00 x 16). I like the ride but the tires are rubbing on the top spindle nut. I really do not want to spend $160 on different size wheels.

Does anyone know of a PN for longer wheel studs or a wheel hub spacer? Current wheel studs are standard (.5 x 1.5 inches). Pictures Are attached.
Thanks!

One of my 51's did that with 5:50X16's. Suggest you may need to be adjusting or replacing bearings and likely the spindle bushings unless something is bent. Jack it up first and check to see where the play is.

I had one that did that too. I replaced the spindle bushings as
Gaspump mentioned and that cured the problem.
I'll second his comment about jacking it up and looking for play.

Dishing the rims the opposite way works too, I have a set on that
way with old truck tires on the rims, but it adds to the wear on the
bushings as they have a bit more leverage then.

He says it's rubbing on the "spindle nut".

Replacing the SPINDLE bushings won't change that, as the relationship between the tire and the "spindle nut" will not change.

NOT sure how tough it would be to find some shims for the hub, as I don't know, offhand, what the bolt pattern is.

A welding shop with a cnc plasma table should be able to knock a couple out pretty easily, and finding longer hub studs should be no problem.

I agree with your geometry Bob but there's something about it
that makes a difference. Maybe the way the tire flexes when it is
set on the ground at an angle instead of straight up and down.
I don't know for sure but I do know there is very little clearance
with a 6 inch tire even when all is right with the world.
If he jacks it up and checks, he may find play in the wheel
bearings which could account for the rub too.

I made a post about some 900-10 tires and
rims I found and put on my tractor a few
weeks ago. Posted it here and on the Ford
board.
Big, fat suckers and they don't rub.
I only have about 10 hours on them so far
but like them a lot.

Those rims look aftermarket, not original rims, you can turn
them inside out and have clearance but I personally don?t like
the looks of that. If it were mine, I would get longer studs and
then use a washer on each stud as a shim behind the wheel
for clearance, looks like you don?t have enough stud length to
try that right now.

"It is the RIMS, not the Tires...."

For sure. Any tire will fit with the right rim. But OP's post clearly
stated he didn't want to buy different rims, so we gave him options.

This is a 600 x 16 mounted on my 8N, taken just now.
First picture jacked up, second one jack down.
No discernible difference with new bushings and wheel bearings.
Yes, I know that tire's junk. But it works to roll them around on. ;)

easiest answer.

For sure check the wheel bearings and spindle bushings just because, but yeah.. the flipped rim is an immediate fix.

I believe I am on the right track now based on all the post.

1. The Front Rims installed are the wrong size for 6.00 x16.
2. Repacked Wheel Bearings, no play noted.
2. Checked the Spindle bushings and they are slap worn out!
3. Ordered Spindle bushings and 2 inch wheel studs (PN C5NN1107F today.

I swapped the wheels around and did not like how it looked. I will let you guys know the out come in a few days when I get parts.

Royce what size front rims are on your 8N?

Not sure of the exact width, but I'll try to get you a measurement.
I think the dish/backset of the rims is of more concern though.

I also suspect wrong rims. My 6.00 x 16 original rims have the 4 holes for the optional wheel weights onmy8Nwork tires. They barely clear the drag links and radius rids at full stroke turning. A busted kingpin may cause more slop too. Your tires look like implement style too. I went to a local boneyard years ago and they had a hundred sets of 16" original rims. I picked out a good set, blasted, primed, and painted them 8N Medium Grey, then added 2-piece wheel weights and now my 8N work tires.

Update: Repacked front wheel bearings, replaced upper and lower spindle bushings, and spindle trust bearing. I now have about 1/4 inch clearance on both front wheels. I will see how it does when I bush hog the fields next month. At the end of the day, the correct wheels will fix this problem!

Thanks you the help!
