Early 9N Ignition Light

Is there a suitable replacement for the early 9N red ignition "on" light? Is anyone reproducing them? Where can I find one that will work? Thanks.

There was a guy reproducing them about 12 years ago but I don't think so anymore. I would suggest you call Dereck at Just 8Ns. Also, might check NComlete in Indiana. Could also put in a want to buy ad in the NNews.

if you're not concerned with authenticity, i'd think any low wattage bulb or LED which matches your tractor's voltage would work fine

Depends what you are looking for a low cost LED light or a Jewel light like original. 6 or 12 volt?

Roger Forst from Prairie Du Chein Wisconsin was reproducing exact as original red indicator lights a couple of years ago. He did one for me and it was perfect. Email me and I will get you his phone number.

Roger Forst did indeed reproduce the early 9N Ignition "ON" lamp, but you needed to have the socket and preferably lens too. Roger use to repop the snap-in battery covers too but he has since retired from making anything now due to health reasons. I took my original socket from my early 9N and sent it to AGR_SERVICES in Alden, NY where Jim makes exact-as-original wiring harnesses. He made me a complete new harness for my 9N project adding in my dash lamp too. It is ready to install, but I'm still working on restoring the tractor so have not gotten that far yet. I have few original NOS sockets somewhere I bought from a defunct dealership a few years ago.

Only the first 25000 9N Tractors used the 9N-3702 Ignition "ON" Lamp Indicator located about at the 6-O'Clock position from the AMMETER on the LH dash panel. Roger Forst used to repop them but no longer does and I do not think anyone currently does either. Although Dennis Carpenter repos EXACT-AS-ORIGINAL wiring harnesses, he does not make the one for the early 9Ns using the dash lamp in addition to the starter button on LH dash panel and key switch on RH dash panel. However, there is a place in Alden, NY, called Agri-Services who do make exact harnesses -see LINK below. Call and talk to Jim. He may have a lamp for you, and even better have him make you a harness too. I did and it looks great, exact, but I supplied my original lamp socket that Roger Forst had wired up for me. I am in the process of restoring my early 9N so have not got as far as wiring it up yet but I do not anticipate having any problems. Jim and I talked quite a few times and he knows his stuff. Also, Don Barkley put together a document with original N wiring harnesses including pictures and specs -it is on the other N Tractor site in How-To's. I understand and can relate wanting to keep your early 9N original, especially if doing a restoration. The problem is finding the original parts, and most of those early parts are no longer repopped nowadays as well. There just isn't a huge market for them. I had some original early 9N generator pulleys made few years ago, only used on the early 9N-10000-A small generator, and thought I could sell a few so I had a number cast. I only sold three and I still have more in stock that I will probably never sell and recoup my return on investment. I bought handful of NOS lamp sockets from a defunct dealer years ago but I don't know where I stashed them. They were only he sockets, no lenses. For what it's worth, every early 9N that has sold at auctions for $20K-$50K in the past ten years have all been incorrect as far as originality go. None had the correct A genny that used the voltage regulator. Most had either the 9N-1000-C generator with cutout or the later 2N-10000 genny. Heck two I saw even had 12-volt convulsions done to them! One of the beauties of tractor shows is that there is no judging. Heck, there are only handful of guys who really know what the early original 9Ns should have anyway. As Harold said, you could find a 6V LED or another clone that looks good on the outside -no one is going to care how it is wired right? I'd call Jim and see if he can help you.

I forgot to add to my post from yesterday, that Dennis Carpenter sells a 'generator warning light', part number B9NN-10241-B, includes PAL nut, which was used on all 58-64 models. PRICE: $12.50. I cannot tell you that this will work, but it may suffice and require a bit of special electrical surgery to mount and wire up. It does not say if it is 6V or 12V but I suspect it is the latter. If so, and it is just a matter of swapping out bulbs, no problem. If an LED and 12V rating, a 6-volt power source will not kill it; it'll just have a weaker illumination field. Not true if the component voltages are reversed. A 12V power source going to a 6V rated lamp will definetly let the smoke out of it for good.

Tim:

Just wanted to say hello! I wish those lights were available from somewhere. As you probably remember, I have two aluminum hood tractors that have been in my barn for over five years waiting for me to get around to them, not to mention my motley collection of parts '39's. A couple of them have the lights, painted over and non functional. That may be my only alternative although getting old paint off early red plastic of unknown composition may be a problem. I have had some ups and downs - retired then back to work again and now retired for good. I'm waiting on building permits for a seven bay shop which will give me a lot more room to work on things. I'm currently rebuilding my 1947 2N with the belly mower.

Give me a holler - email is slightly changed
