n question on 12 volt conversion

I have looked at many wiring diagrams of 12 volt conversion but I'm still not sure about the resistors. The 9n was already in partial conversion when I bought it so I will finish that way. It has a front mount distributor with a 12 volt coil (which I installed). It also had a ballast resistor in place but not wired ( the wiring job was a mess). My question is do I need the ballast resistor in the ignition system or not. If I do, why. Thanks, Darrel

The purpose of the ballast resistor is to drop the voltage to the points to prolong their life.If you have electronic ignition installed in your front mount you
want to by-pass the resistor.

(quoted from post at 08:21:56 06/10/18) I do not have electronic but it sounds like I should include the ballast. Thanks

Yes use the ballast resistor, it is needed to protect the coil. with a 12 volt coil you do not need an extra resistor in the wire going to the coil.

Nope.

If voltage to the points was the issue, then you would have different points for 6v and 12v tractors.

The purpose of the resistor is to reduce coil current below 4 amps.
