8n front mount coil

Where have you guys gotten reliable 8n
coils? I've heard that the ones they are
selling now are pure junk. Also, has
anyone here ever 'ripped the guts out of'
the front mount distributor coil and
rigged up a canister type coil system?

undreds of posts on doing this .....just search.

Ok, found what you were talking about. Now, just playing a little devils advocate here...
If I can get my coil rewound over buying a hunk of Asian junk, would it be worth it over buying a QUALITY repop?

I'm dealing with this too, as I've had a coil go bad after very little use on the tractor.

I'm not trying to hijack your thread: the info I'm seeking may be of use to you as well.

I have a ballast resistor and a 12v coil. If I'm distilling this post [/url]http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=ford&th=467614 down correctly, a 6v coil with the...ould last longer. Have I got this correct?

I was told by an old farmer very knowledgeable in the 8n to NOT run the 6 volt without the resistor, as it will damage the coil. He was 110% right, by the way!

ou are not going to find anyone to rewind a coil.

ou distilled correctly.

Thanks for the confirmation. That's what I'll do then!

Now, if only I could put my distillations in charred oak barrels and age them for a while...

I've only ever bought front mount coils. Had no trouble with either one. You can buy a kit to convert a front mount to a round can coil. I've never tried it.

So, replaced the points today with a set of blue streaks from the local Federated Auto. Luck would have it that they had a coil, made by the same company that manufactures blue streaks (standard motor products). Problem is, it's just under $100. Anyone ever use a S.M.P. coil, and if so what are the results?

don't expect any responses, as who would pay $100 for an N coil??????????

The last time I priced a coil from Carquest. It was 98 or 99 dollars. I have an account with A&I products. I order my front mounts from them. Had no trouble with them.

ery strange! I kept trying to insert various chinese characters and every time I would hit "Submit", it would say DEBUG MODE as when there is an unacceptable word(cussing, etc.) in message, so I never thought it was actually accepting & posting anything until the very last one with all the *****

I talked to Dennis Carpenter Restorations last night and did some research on their coils. Over 3 years and 200 sold, only 8 were returned for either being damaged in shipping or burning up. Chinese made, NOS style with Ford script. They are selling from a shipment they rejected because there were screws on the top of the coil instead of rivets. $30. Supposedly 9f they burn up within a year they'll replace it
