So got the tractor switched to 12v and it was running great. Starting almost right away. It’s a 8n front mount. The problem I have now is after using it to move some hay equipment around the starter just has a high whine noise no engagement of the motor. Due to my work schedule I can’t pull the starter for a few days. Does this sound like a bad bendix? Or something else?

Thanks

this is uncanny timing.

YMMV, but i just finally today diagnosed this situation on my 2N. sometimes, i'd push the starter button and nothing. let off, push it again, whine. let off, push it [i:9e7805868a]again[/i:9e7805868a], engine turns over normally.

turned out to not be the starter at all. turned out to be the positive cable not being tight on the battery post. i never suspected it because it would turn over fine after the little ritual, and i would have thought a loose end would not behave like that. i'm going to need to replace that end, because it won't tighten down properly any more. but in the meantime, a block of wood and a hammer did a marvelous job of fixing my starter :D

Yep, that will result in the same thing as a weak battery!

I found out that the starter will spin w/o engaging the Bendix from low voltage when it happened on my 51. Charged battery, clean connections, new cables..?.but the starter post was loose inside the starter.
